A sense of loyalty, which can only exist if there is bonding to begin with. Bonding establishes trust, and without trust, it's hard to hold on at all. Sometimes economic interests are enough to pull people through hard times, and there is nothing inherently selfish about that - human beings are economic animals, and a marriage is as much an investment for the future as it is a romantic involvement. Children can provide plenty of motivation for trying to solve problems.
