Illegal to buy or sell people
Athletes are not sold, their contract is. Its their choice to move or not, they can always retire

No. But there has been some talk about changing the law on how the exchange of assets in a business transaction will be taxed - not a sales tax - that could impact how professional sports teams run their businesses. The proposed change was targeted toward other types of businesses, without any of the lawmakers considering the impact it would have on pro sports.we don't have human trafficking at least legally in the US, an athlete is the subject of an employee contract where he offers his services for which he is paid, if he doesn't perform those services he doesn't get paid
and a contract is not an item that is assessed for sales tax

sales tax laws VARY STATE TO STATE, so contact the state(s) you are interested in and ask STATE TAX OFFICE in each one this question.

Professional athletes have agents. But they are not owned by the agent. Agents get dropped all the time.
