Some people read one book at a time. I always keep at least 3 going. How about you, and why do you do it that way?

It depends, some books take a long time to read for me (the ones I don't like that much, but don't dislike enough to stop reading), in which case I usually read a few in between. Other books I finish in a matter of hours/days and don't read anything else while doing so.
So two books at a time is the maximum for me - at least if we're talking fiction. With non-fiction there's really no upper limit.

I usually read 3 or more books at a given time. I have a book or two I read in bed , depending upon my mood, a book I read in the living room, if I'm bored with what's on TV, but my wife or family are enthusiastic about the program, and a book I read at work on breaks or at lunch.
I do it that way partly so I don't have to lug books around, but also partly so that I can take a break from one style to read another. As an example, I am reading a heavy, hard-core history of the Korean War in the bedroom, but sometimes, I don't feel up to the task, so I then read one of the Laurie King "Mary Russell" novels or Janet Evanovich or Jim Butcher or something. Something lighter and less intellectually-taxing.

I can only enjoy 1 fictional book at a time (otherwise I mix up characters). But while I'm reading my one fictional book, I'll be reading a history book, a biography book, a poli-sci book like Shattered or Russian Roulette, and a computer programming book all at the same time. I also cannot read the same author of fiction more than twice in a row...it depresses me for some reason.

I prefer to read one book at a time. but if I have some hardcover library books, I will read them at home. but when I'm out I'll read stuff on my kindle. So then I'm reading 2 books at a time.

Basically I go one at a time, (not always) . If it's a good book all it takes is one or two days to read it. If it's good but slow moving I may take a month or more to read it I fill in the gap by reading one day books and tons of short stories.

I have juggled two books at the same time occasionally. like a fictional work and a non-fiction work, and switch back and forth. And I have a magazine rack in my bathroom with recent magazines to read while I'm using the thundermug or soaking in the bathtub.
I just like to switch between fiction and scientific fact. A novel to escape reality, and a factual book when I feel like learning something.

Only one novel at a time. However, I may also be reading magazines or reference books at the same time.

I read one at a time. I get the most out of it, easier to remember all that is going on, etc. That is just the way I have always done it (outside of school text books).
