    It binds to the same receptors (like nerve endings) in the brain that opioid drugs do. That's why it can have a similar effect. There are risks to using it. One problem is that you can get really sick if you take too much (it has to be weighed on a gram scale). By sick I mean intense nausea. It goes away after a while but it's horrible. People have to experiment carefully to determine which type of kratom and how much to use.

    It is not [yet] illegal in the US, so to say is banned is not correct; the person who wrote that probably didn't read the article they linked you to.

    See below, but I wouldn't recommend your using it. It has not been properly or scientifically tested for either safety or effectiveness. It's been banned as a supplement in the US.
