Are newly established PhD programs relatively less competitive?
I am currently a student at University of California, Irvine with the Psychology and Social Behavior Major. I want to get a PhD in clinical psychology without traveling far - while UCLA has the #1 ranked clinical PhD program, it is incredibly competitive, they accept such a small number of applicants each year.
HOWEVER I found out that UCI is adding a Clinical PhD program in two years, which would be perfect for me. I d be applying for the very first year the program exists. I am wondering if newly established programs have less applicants even at highly regarded schools? Relatively speaking of course. Probably less people will know about it, and some choose only to apply to established schools (I heard a story of someone not wanting to apply to UCI s Law school when it was new, and it ended up very highly regarded, bet she regrets it now!)
**Does anyone have experience applying to new PhD programs at established schools? Anyone behind that process know the numbers? Do less people apply the first few years the program exists and then the applicants increase as time goes on?
I am going to have about a 3.8 GPA, solid letters of rec, and research experience, but even a great portfolio has no guarantees when you get 800 applicants to a program only accepting 10-15 students (like UCLA clinical PhD).

Just because the school is well regarded does not mean a new program, especially something like Clinical Psychology, is going to be accredited right away.
How many hear about a new program & apply depends on how much notice they get, how the school promotes a new program, etc. If they aim for really top ratings, they will still be extremely selective, recruiting top prospects from top schools to get known.
