back wheels lock up going backwards but are fine going forward. What could be the problem?

    The parking brake shoes inside the back rotors have had the shoe material separate drum the metal shoes and is binding inside the rotor.

    You probably have drum brakes in the rear. They 'adjust' themselves when you drive backwards, IF they are working right. IF they are not 'working right', the rear wheels will lock-up. Take the tires & the drums off & look for a broken coil spring ...................

    Broken brake shoe return springs.
