My coworkers found that it was cheaper to get a Bachelor of Science degree, for their kids. Airplane mechanics work outside, nights, in the worst weather, in unsafe conditions. We are treated like sub humans. Our neighbors call us grease monkeys. Our kids are not proud of what we do. Management and flight crews hate us. We get relocated frequently. Usually to some place worse. Mergers, deregulation, and more regulations, make job security problematic. You won't find work near your home. No matter where you live.

In 40 years in the industry, I was recruited once, and had one other hire-in interview. I received paychecks from 7 different airlines. I lived and worked in 11 different states. I had Tuesday and Wednesday off, on second shift after 40 years. When I retired, USAirways took a bankruptcy and quit paying into my pension, and health care.

Get a job at your nearby Toyota dealership. More money, better working conditions, job security and benefits. You get to go home while your kids are still awake, and have week ends off. The boss and the customers will smile at you instead of swearing at you too!

Become a plumber or HVAC technician instead. You go home at 5 pm everyday. No working night shift. No working Christmas and Thanksgiving and weekends. No noise hazard. $90 an hour when you become a master plumber. But if you want to work from 7 pm to 7 am for the rest of your life, go ahead.
