My heat in my apartment increases on its own?

We have it set around 70 usually. Now it has gotten cold, so we must turn on the heat. This problem happened all winter last year. It’s set around 70 and the temp setting shows “70” but the actual temp gets higher and higher until you turn it off. It has gotten up to the 90s. Maintenance replaced the batteries last year and when that didn’t work they blamed us and did not fix it. SOS

Since you obviously are renting, contact your landlord and let them know you need a new thermostat. The cost of having it repaired will be less than the extra heat they're paying for. You should NOT hire an HVAC guy on your own, or attempt to replace it or fix it. It needs a new one, and the contract needs to be made with the owner of the builder or their representatives.

It needs a new thermostat and a qualified HVAC person to look at it.

Get a new thermostat. Problem does not go away, call an HVAC technician.

Sounds like it's broke or the resistance setting is off. It cost less that $30 for a cheap programmable type
