30 years ago there was a sexual survey along the lines of the Kinsey survey of the early 1950s in US colleges. They asked the young men about their sexual attractions and about 30% if the young men said they did have at least some sexual attraction to some men. That is nearly 1 guy in 3. Society is becoming less critical of gays and accepting that gays are decent people and not the child molesters many straights used to claim. Men are finding females less interested in them whereas 50 years ago women had one aim in life and that was to be married. These days many men find women are putting marriage off and are less interested in sex until later so men are turning to other males for some sexual friendship. Guys are more relaxed these days to be sexual with each other even though most will marry later. As many young males believe any sex is better than no sex.

Because now they can. Before the last 20-30 years, it was considered so taboo in most communities many men who were bi or gay never admitted it. Now they feel empowered and safe to do so.

It is safer than it ever used to be to come out. There was A LOT to lose 30, 40 years ago: reputation, family, job, job security clearance, custody of children, family acceptance.
