What are your Christmas traditions?

My family started celebrations last night by going to church to hear my husband's grandfather sing the solo of "O Holy Night" in the church choir (the one time of year we go to church). We then came home and let each kid open one gift. Then packed off to bed.

Now I'm baking cinnamon rolls as our traditional morning food, and will wake the kids and hubby up for Christmas gift unwrapping, followed by watching a movie together (probably Miracle on 34th St, the kids' favorite), and then dinner with the grandparents this evening!

Redneck hillbilly side of the family Christmas Eve. Food and drink. Family drama. Food. So much food. Presents opened, paper flying, bows flung, hugs and cries of, wow, did you get these boxes at Joanne's? [Pretty boxes bought at local hobby store.] Pictures of cougars trapped by cousin. You read that right, darlings. Talk of coyote pelts being real high this year. You read that right. Live theatre performance from Bubba and his woman Viki Bobbi, who hate each other, life in general and their two tiny kids especially. Fun! [Not their real names.]

Christmas day, now. Spent with the more highbrow relations, who are FOX NEWS JUNKIES. Some actual travel, state lines crossed. Not too far away. Food. The same stories we all heard at Thanksgiving about buying a can of olives at Costco that nearly led to the end of life on this planet. [Don't ask.] The arrival of relatives of the relatives. Uncomfortable chairs. Oh the uncomfortable chairs. The out of body moments where you hear things that raise the hair on the back of your neck. The moments where you pretend how deaf you are. Eating olives. Is that meat raw? Weather talk. The same old stories you heard not a month ago. The relief that you did your duty and now can go home.

    Merry Christmas!

In my youth, my Irish Catholic family got drunk.

That was not confined to Christmas.

Christmas today, as it was 50 years ago is a commerce tradition.

The retail businesses need it to survive.

Unfortunately, I have none. Thanks for sharing yours though.

Have a happy New Year, and Godspeed.
