Can you have a roll cage in a car in California?

I have a 1996 vw golf gti vr6 that I’m building for the 24 hours of lemons races. I have to have a cage in the car to race. If I install the cage will it still pass Smog? And the dmv said they wanted to look at the car.

Or should I get it street legal then put the cage in the car? I live in California

I have built 2 cars in Texas new to California and yes it’s Lemons you buy a car for 500 or less fix it up and safety doesn’t count

3 classes there’s class A where your going to finish the race and place in the top 10 Class B where you wil finish the race but won’t place

Class C where somethings going to happen And your car won’t cross the checkered flag either it blows up or you can’t keep it running. You have to have a theme and a mascot. It’s a lot of fun

A roll cage has nothing to do with the amount of smog a car passes

WTF is Lemons races? Surely you don't mean Le Mans?

    1) The roll cage cannot restrict vision or the entry / exit of the occupants or the full deployment of airbags.

    2) What does a roll cage have to do with smog checks? Answer: nothing.

You're going to race "Lemons"??????? With a '96 VW?? YEAH, right. Nice dream, but it's doubtful you have the millions it would take to do that.

    (Le Mans)

One of your other questions stated your period was late. How did that work out?

Race cars although can be augmented in a way that keeps them street legal will not pass smog in Cali, if they are worth a damn for racing.

Just tell them you're paranoid about being in an accident.

What difference do you think a roll cage will make with your emissions? I'd like to hear your explanation, it will probably be amusing.

A roll cage won't affect your emissions.
