At the auction at the Rossi estate, why does Rafe rig the auction so that the lot order gets changed, so that the Saint Dismas cross gets brought out earlier?

In large scale, high stakes auctions such as those, the more expensive items are always saved for the end of the show.

As such, people tend to to bid on early items because they'd rather wait and see whats on offer much later on in the auction. If people spend their money to early after all, theres no reason to be there for the rest of the auction.

Theres also that some people will have specific items in mind, and once they have them will look at other smaller items with what funds they have left. Or people who fail to acquite bigger items will look at smaller things as consolation prizes.

So Rafe rigs the auction to bring the cross forward so that no-one else is likely to bid on it. Not unless they specifically want that particular item.
