How do you discipline in a situation like this?

My friend adopted a boy who was abused from infancy to 3 years old. He was her husband s biological child from a one night stand. He was locked in closets, sexually abused and physically beaten until he was removed from his mother s house and my friend believed in punishment but everything she did (time outs, spanking removing privileges etc) cause his behavior to get worse.

Eventually I helped her get her kids on a reward system and his behavior improved slowly.

How would you handle a situation like that?

Your story isn't believable troll. A child like this would require years of therapy, multiple kinds of therapy. Your "friend" wouldn't need you to stop in and put her child on a reward system. Your friend would also be observed by CPS, doctors and so on.
