How bad is it to have a C in high school?

I got a C in geometry and the actual grade was a 79 which makes it more annoying. I tried my best.. went to extra help and fried my brain for the final and got a 64 on that so I need to know will it ruin my chances of getting into a good college.. I am NOT trying to get in an Ivy League/ elite school etc but think more like Rutgers, Stockton, or Rowan.. I will probably get a 1200 on the SAT and I do 4 clubs too and get some volunteer hours, and all my other grades a Bs and I have one A So yeah idk what to think about this. This is the first C I’ve ever gotten for the year.

Grades matter when it comes to meeting future education goals, but those goals may be very different from one student to the next. For most students, the two biggest factors when it comes to grades are potential for scholarship awards and potential for college acceptance.

High school grades do matter when it comes to earning scholarships for college and being accepted into your college of choice. If your dreams are lofty and you have your heart set on one specific college, then you must take your grades seriously. You should avoid grade problems ahead of time if you become ill and have to miss class, or if you have a serious situation in your life that might impact your grades. You can sometimes avoid bad grades by simply communicating with your teacher.

But just for the record, it is usually not a good idea to pin your hopes and dreams on a single college. This can cause stress and pressure, and that can do even more harm.

In the event that you are already stuck with a bad grade point average in high school and you really want to go to college — you don't have to despair, really. You just have to be flexible about the type of college you are willing to attend, and you may have to prepare to pay your way through college with your family funds or through financial aid.

One C isn't the end of the world. Most universities look at cumulative unweighted GPA and SAT/ACT score as the first consideration. Use a website like Niche or BigFuture to see what schools are a good fit if your GPA stays where it is now and what GPA and test score you'd need to be a realistic candidate for your preferred schools. As Drip points out, the C cancelled out the A, so your have a B average or 3.0 GPA now. That isn't high enough for a lot of universities.

Average gpa of incoming Rutgers freshman is 3.7.

Since you have a B average or a 3.0 Rutgers is a real reach school for you.

You can google any university for gpa and sat/act of incoming freshman to give you an idea of where you stand.
