At what point will human tissue heal fast enough that it is not necessary for a doctor to remove it to save a person's life?

A doctor, especially a surgeon, should know about this issue. There are thousands of amputees made daily. I would like to know that doctors are trained with this information before I step inside a hospital with a sore on my foot and step outside with only one leg. I have diabetic and amputee friends and acquaintances, so I do not ask this lightly.
