When Jesus spoke Acts 1:5 “fulfilling” water baptism, did that nullify all water baptisms throughout the Book of Acts?

Update:

@ANON

What are you talking about " not just of one or the other" when JESUS SAID "one baptism" in Ephesians 4:5 and told us which "one" in Acts 1:5?

What are you talking about "Water cleanses the flesh leading the way for Holy Spirit baptism by fire which purges/purifies our spirits" when JESUS SAID "...but [Putting contrast on water baptism] ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost" (Acts 1:5)?

"Our comely parts have no need" (I Corinthians 12:24)!

What are you talking about?

When Socrates was sentenced to death for his philosophical investigations, and for blasphemy for challenging the gods of the city — and he accepted his death — he did say, "well, if we are lucky, perhaps I'll be able to hold conversation with other great thinkers and philosophers and doubters too."

In other words the discussion about what is good, what is beautiful, what is noble, what is pure, and what is true could always go on.

Why is that important? Why would I like to do that? Because that's the only conversation worth having.

And whether it goes on or not after I die, I don't know. But I do know that that's the conversation I want to have while I'm still alive.

Which means that to me, the offer of certainty, the offer of complete security, the offer of an impermeable faith that can't give way, is an offer of something not worth having.

I want to live my life taking the risk all the time that I don't know anything like enough yet; that I haven't understood enough; that I can't know enough; that I'm always hungrily operating on the margins of a potentially great harvest of future knowledge and wisdom.

I wouldn't have it any other way.

And I'd urge you to look at... those people who tell you, at your age, that you're dead till you believe as they do — what a terrible thing to be telling to children!

And that you can only live by accepting an absolute authority — don't think of that as a gift. Think of it as a poisoned chalice. Push it aside however tempting it is. Take the risk of thinking for yourself. Much more happiness, truth, beauty, and wisdom will come to you that way.

    Well...

let's see if that's what Jesus said before answering your question:

Nope. Jesus did not say that.

Conclusion: when you have to misrepresent what a Bible passage teaches in order to support your doctrine

you should realize that any careful Bible-believing Christians is not going to fall for your deception.

Act 1:5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

No, it's a case of both water and Holy Spirit baptism - not just of one or the other.

Water cleanses the flesh leading the way for Holy Spirit baptism by fire which purges/purifies our spirits.

You actually have no idea what Jesus spoke for all you have are the tails of men who were not present.

No. Water baptism continued as intended. Even Paul and others long after the ascension of Yeshua continued to water immersion baptism.

Like you've said before, JESUS wouldn't have commanded baptism in Matthew 28:19, nullified it in Acts 1:5, and then approved of it being commanded again in Acts 2:38 (and many other verses thereafter).

Since Jesus DID command it in Matthew 28:19 (and had the authority to do so - verse 18) and it was commanded in His name (according to His authority) in Acts 2:38, the your understanding of Acts 1'5 must be incorrect or distorted.

There is still a need for water baptism!

When Paul encountered some Jews who taught baptism in his ministry he asked if they received the gift of the Holy Spirit when they were baptized. When they said they had never heard of the Holy Spirit he baptized them again (and they received the gift).

In the book of Acts the baptism of the Holy Spirit happened right before (the story of Cornelius) or right after the water baptism.

In Ist Peter even Peter states baptism with water is part of salvation, just like he put the two together (actually 3 things) in Acts 2:38.

    @David at your service:

Y!A wouldn't let your answer be posted neither could I read it all but the portion I could copy is as follows:

"Act 1:5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. First tell us where you are seeing the word "fulfill". Also, years after Acts 10, Paul wrote this: 1Co 1:16 (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether..." show more

And notice how Paul was talking about water baptism as if he didn't give a DAMN and in the NEXT VERSE said "Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel" (I Corinthians 1:17)!

In I Corinthians 11:1 were are commanded to "Follow Paul as he follows Christ"

Consequently "Christ didn't send us to water baptize but to preach the gospel" ((( IF ))) we "follow Paul as he follows Christ."

After all, "the apostles are our foundation" according to Ephesians 2:19-20!

I don't know why you people don't know that John the Baptist was the ONLY ONE "sent to baptize with water" (John 1:33) while the disciples only helped him (John 4:2).

The definition of his water baptism is defined in Acts 19:4 which was one of "REPENTANCE; ***BELIEVING THAT JESUS WAS COMING"***

But when JESUS CAME BACK in the glory of the Holy Ghost (Acts 1:2)as promised (John 14:18) on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:2-3) Jesus knew a "BELIEVING THAT HE WAS COMING" baptism was no longer necessary and is why He "FULFILLED" in Acts 1:5.

You people don't know how IGNORANT you look with a belief in a water baptism "BELIEVING THAT JESUS IS COMING!"

I guess that's why you people are so EVIL pretending you are Christians but are worse than an atheist!

You REALLY don't know Jesus nor do you believe that He came back! From the day I came on Y!A everyone did and still do believe in a "second coming." However if Jesus didn't come back, He doesn't dwell in you and you are none of His" (Romans 8:9
