Why did ancient Japanese write on paper walls and lanterns?
In this clip from the Japanese film, "Hidden Blade" (2004), you can see that there is writing on paper walls and the paper-wrapped lantern. Why did they do it, and what kinds of things were written? (I don't think you'll be able to read what's in the clip, so, don't worry about that; I'm just looking for generalizations) Thanks!

I think with lanterns, people would write prayers or wishes and then the lanterns would be set loose, either on water, or as hot air balloons. The idea was that it would carry your thoughts to the gods.

Why do people make samplers saying "Bless this house" or quotes from the Psalms? Paper walls were not durable and are ideal for bearing inspirational mottoes.
