If you live a healthy and active lifestyle and don't plan on having children, the U.S. is potentially the place for you. If you plan on having many children and need the help putting them all through school, Canada may be the more suitable choice for your family. Whichever the case, the choice should be made on the basis of what you value most.

It depends on were. Have you looked at Canadas heating bills? Or the deep souths A.C. bills. Right now it is a little cheaper for a American to live in Canada. If they keep there money in the U.S. This has gone up & down over the years. But never a great difference.

This really depends on where in each nation you're living and what kind of work you do. Vancouver is currently more expensive than L.A. but in the Canadian midwest (much like in the US midwest) things are cheaper. Then you have to factor in your healthcare. If you're in the US and have employer granted medical insurance you might create a situation that's cheaper than in Canada (based on the higher taxes there). Consumables like food are cheaper in the US but if you have to consider buying an individual healthcare plan that might eat up any savings. Likewise, some places in US (e.g. NYC, SFO), are far more expensive than anywhere in Canada. In this case, you probably would not want a generalization of overall costs, but some specifics.

Another consideration: VAT in Canada dramatically increases costs as VAT (varying by province) still exceeds sales tax rates anywhere in US. The VAT v. sales tax equation definitely complicates comparisons!

Depends on the city.  If you live in San Francisco, of course it costs more than if you live than a city in Canada.   But if you live in Fresno, living in the US can be less costly.   However, the hospitals are much much cheaper in Canada than in the US.  It costs nothing in Canada for an eye check while in the US, if you need prescription glasses, an eye check by a doctor costs about $360 per exam. 

Americans make a little more money on average.  Canadians pay more for housing and a lot more for food, but they get much better services from their government and post-secondary education is a lot cheaper.  Americans pay a LOT more for health care and college.  So it works out.
