I second (or third or whatever) the answers that recommend The Stand; one of my all time favourite books and one I keep going back to. It is dense, but worth it to read.

Honourable mentions to Pet Sematary and Salem's Lot as two of the very few books that have actually given me nightmares (if that is a positive!).

The stand was probably my favourite, but I'm not a big stephen King Fan. The Shining was a bit tedious, although the movie is one of my all time favourites. The length of his books don't bother me, as I've read much longer, it's all the long-winded crap he adds into them. The Tommy Knockers I could even finish...almost as tedious a Wuthering Heights.

    The Stand is my favorite.

King is a really good storyteller but he really needs an editor to rein him in.  Not every novel needs to be 1500 pages!   My favorite King Novels are The Stand and Needful Things but they are both well over 1200 pages.

The Shinning is one of his better written books.  If you are having trouble finishing it you might want to try reading some of King's shorter works.

    A few I suggest:

Night Shift and Full Dark No Stars Short Story Collections

Different Season and Four Past Midnight  Novela collections:

Why didn't you finish reading "The Shining"? That's his best one.

I don't know Stephen King, but I do know a good tip for trying to focus at work, (or just to do something fun) especially in a meeting, is to remove your pants and then tie them around your neck. Here comes the delicate part, tie the pant legs into a fisherman's knot, which means that you tie a fish into a normal knot. Now here comes the risky part, tie each end of the pant leg to each wrist and cross your arms as if you were a person with your arms crossed. Now finally here comes the part that is a part. Try not to fall asleep, because then you will choke yourself and die and stuff, so that is a good motivation for you to stay awake, also the smell of the dead fish may do the trick. Let me know how it goes.

I think his best stories are "The Stand", "The Shining", "Salem's Lot", "Needful Things".  If you think "Carrie" is long you want to try "It".

Well I read the Shining and it was a good book, but let me say, it was a long read. It took nearly 270 pages before things got going. Prior to that it was like a haunted house story, with strange things happening they couldn't explain.

I'm glad I got through it, It helped me with watching the movie and the first 30 pages were great but King, imho is overrated as a writer.
