Why don't trinitarians understand the difference between honoring and worshiping?

To honor doesn't mean to worship.

Whereas to worship includes honoring.

John 5:23 doesn't say we are to worship Jesus.

It says we are to honor Jesus.

Yet trinitarians will argue to honor is to worship.

Update:

Thanks for your comments, but you haven't answered the question.

I agree one verse doesn't make doctrine,But trinitarians use this verse to prove Jesus is God, and yet this verse doesn't say what they want it to say.

Update 2:

G4352 προσκυνέω proskuneō

In the NT this word is applied to men of rank and not just to God

Thayer Definition: 3) in the NT by kneeling or prostration to do homage (to one) or make obeisance, whether in order to express respect or to make supplication

3a) used of homage shown to men and beings of superior rank

3a1) to the Jewish high priests

3a2) to God

3a3) to Christ

3a4) to heavenly beings

3a5) to demons

Thus the NWT is accurate and truthful in it's translation of Mt 14:33 "obeisance"

Update 3:

A lot of typical comments [Jesus is God], but no actual answer to my question.

Which actually proves the point of my question:

Why don't trinitarians understand the difference between honoring and worshiping?

From the many comments, since no one actually answered the question. I have to conclude as a whole, trinitarians DO NOT understand the difference between the Biblical words 'worship' and 'honor'.

    G4352 προσκυνέω  proskuneō  Thayer Definition:

"in the NT by kneeling or prostration to do homage (to one) or make obeisance, whether in order to express respect or to make supplication - used of homage shown to men and beings of superior rank"

Yet at John 5:23 Jesus used the Greek word:

G5091 τιμάω  timaō;to fix the value, to price: - had been set (1), honor (16), honored (1), honors (2), price (1).

You will notice in the NASB and even the KJV translation, this word is never translated as worship.

How does Jesus use this word?

Matt 15:4; 19:19  "Honor [g5091] your father and mother"

Matt 15:28 "Honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me"

John 12:26 "If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor [g5091] him.

If as trinitarians claim, to honor is to worship, then you have God worshiping man.

    Never may that happen!

Add to this, John 5:23 is between John 5:19, and verse 30.

In these 2 verses, Jesus denies being equal to God, since he cannot do a single thing of himself.

It is truly sad, when trinitarians understand simple statements of honor and worship [as in Matt 15:4 and John 12:26] UNTIL you insert Jesus into the statement [John 5:23].

Then you get the typical comment echoed here:  "Jesus is God".

    ================

    edit to comment

Thank you for the typical trinitarian comment. "Jesus is God"

But this doesn't answer the original question concerning 'honor verses worship'.

And it is true, our love for our family should be less than our love for Jesus, not because Jesus is God but because as he continued to say:

(Matthew 10:40) “40 “Whoever receives you receives me also, and whoever receives me receives also the One who sent me.”

Which agrees with (John 5:23) “23 so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.”

In both verses, all glory is directed back to God the Father.

Look at another example, Mt. 8:2. There are many NT examples just like this one.

Why don't you understand that Christians = Trinitarians?

Why don't you understand the difference between "to worship" and "to pray to"?

To worship =/= to pray to.  We worship and we pray to God, requesting his help or blessing.

The God the Son taught us to "request the intercession of" = "pray to" his mother when he performed his first miracle at the wedding at Cana, turning water into wine *because his mother interceded* for the wedding hosts?

We can honor many people for various reasons. Worship is reserved for God alone - Father, Son (Jesus), and Holy Spirit.

We completely understand the difference.  It's the JWs that butcher the word "worship" in the Bible as shown below (emp. added).

Mt 4:8 (NWT)  Again the Devil took him along to an unusually high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9  And he said to him: “All these things I will give you if you fall down and do an act of WORSHIP to me.” 10  Then Jesus said to him: “Go away, Satan! For it is written: ‘It is Jehovah your God you must WORSHIP, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service.’”

Mt 14:33 (NWT) Then those in the boat did OBEISANCE to him, saying: “You really are God’s Son.”

If you look at the original Greek for the two passages above, the word translated as "worship" in Mt 4:8-10 is "proskynēseis" the same word used in 14:33 except whenever it applies to Jesus (or Cornelius), they change the translation to "obeisance" which is a simple respectful bow or curtsy.  So consider this.

Ac 10:25 (NWT)  As Peter entered, Cornelius met him, fell down at his feet, and did obeisance to him. 26  But Peter lifted him up, saying: “Rise; I too am just a man.”

Now why would Peter tell Cornelius to, "Rise; I too am just a man"? when all Cornelius did was give him a respectful bow?  It's obvious that Cornelius began worshiping Peter, thus the same word is used in this passage as in Mt 4:9.

JW's literally mistranslate words in their Bible as needed to support their false teaching that Jesus was not God.

  • Listen to the Watchtower, take your headphones off, otherwise you can't hear well?

Honor, worship, and worship, it's the same thing, what did you study when you were in school? Donald Duck? Or Uncle Donald Duck?

    John 5:23.

That all may honor the Son as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.

The biblical context is abundant, it speaks of honouring the Son, in the person of Jesus Christ, therefore, there cannot be 2 Gods, but only one God, in his own Deity of man. Is your supposed question as false as false coins?

    Matthew 28:8-10.

And they went hastily out of the tomb with fear and great joy and ran to announce it to his disciples.

9 When, behold, Jesus came to meet them, saying, "Greetings! And they came near, and held his feet, and worshipped him. 10 Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid; go and tell my brethren that they are going to Galilee; they will see me there.

Why do the disciples worship Jesus? And why doesn't Jesus reproach them by saying that only God is to be worshipped? eh?

    Fake Religious!!!

Go and mince your false ideas, the word of God is not for You, but is addressed to His true faithful Christian believers.

    Matthew 28:18-20.

And Jesus came near and spoke to them, saying, "All power has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, 20 teaching them to observe all things which I have commanded you. And, behold, I am with you every day until the end of the present age.

The Deity of God is manifest, Father, Son, Holy Spirit, it is baptized in the name of three equal and distinct persons, it is not baptized in the name of three abstract things!

Now trigger your Antichrist, and see that you are present in the judgment of God, otherwise the angels will lead you strongly to be before God, on the day of your condemnation to hell, even if you deny hell is real, it is not the garbage of the valley of Hinnon!

Why is Jesus called "Mighty God" and "Eternal Father"?

    See Isaiah 9:5.

This verse contains several titles that were prophetically given to Jesus Christ, the child born to us. Some of the titles need to be studied in depth to understand their meaning (for example, the kind of peace of which he is the Prince - see the commentary on Matthew 10:34-36), but there are two titles in particular that sometimes create some difficulty: Mighty God and Eternal Father.

Mighty God: Exactly the same term is used of God in the next chapter (Isaiah 10:21), and in Psalm 24:8 we read about mighty YHWH. It is a title given only to God himself, so we must conclude that this child would have been God born as human.

    What about your leaders?

    JWs worshiped Jesus until 1954.

Then your then leaders, gave a new definition to the word worship, whenever Jesus was mentioned.

"Jehovah God commands all to worship Christ Jesus because Christ Jesus is the express image of his Father, Jehovah, and because he is the Executive Officer of Jehovah always carrying out Jehovah's purpose (Heb.:3-6)." Watchtower 1939 Nov 15 p.339

"During the Millennium, "the princes will lead the people in their worship of Jehovah and of Christ." Vindication Volume 3 (J. F. Rutherford, 1932) p.295

"The people of all nations who obtain salvation must come to the house of the Lord to worship there; that is to say, they must believe on and worship Jehovah God and the Lord Jesus Christ, his chief instrument (Philippians 2:10, 11)." Salvation (J. F. Rutherford, 1939) p.151

Jehovah’s Witness telling Christians what the Bible teaches is laughable beyond reason. Are you aware that the Bible is a “Catholic “ book.  You should approach the eastern or western church as to how it is interpreted.

You use our book yet misunderstand what it says. You are wanna be Catholics.  You should consider catholic or orthodox catechesis.

Doctrine and theological ideas don’t hang on a single scripture.  That’s poor exegesis.
