Why did the Raiders draft Jamarcus Russell? why did Al Davis think he was going to be a star, their franchise QB?

just bringing this up because, Jamarcus Russell is the reason why the rookie contract scale exists, he was overpaid there, he got paid a lot for being lazy.

That contract hurt the team, franchise for a bit. His rookie deal was 61 million. Average of 10 mil a year. And the salary cap was only like 100 mil. To put that into perspective Ben, Eli, Brady, Brees, McNair and Culpepper were all making less than him.

I believe even Matt Millen advised Al Davis to not draft him, even Lane Kiffin was against drafting him.

No one could tell Davis anything. He once used a first round draft pick to draft a P and another year a K.

Because his scouts bought into the hype and that's not uncommon. Brian Bozworth is another classic example of this. Scouts bought into the hype, but as a player he was pure garbage.

Hindsight is 20/20, he was a big QB with a huge arm and moved pretty well for a guy of size. You can still google scouting reports calling him the best prospect.

It didn’t help the rest of the QB class was horrible. The best is a coin toss between Trent Edwards and Drew Stanton, Kevin Kolb is not too far behind.

Jamarcus Russell was the Joe Biden of the NFL.  A worthless no-talent imbecile.

Russell was touted as the most physically talented quarterback prospect since John Elway. Scouts raved about his size, arm strength and quick feet, and compared him to Daunte Culpepper, Byron Leftwich, and Ben Roethlisberger.

But his career was doomed from the start because his head coach, Lane Kiffin, wanted the team to take Calvin Johnson over Russell and Kiffin's disappoiintment turned to disgust when Russell missed training camp because of a contract dispute.

Add to that Russell's tendency to make horrible on-field decisions, both on and off the field and it truly is a mystery why Al Davis took him with the top pick.

Davis had a reputation as a maverick who thought he knew more than everyone else but by 2007 Al was just a senile old fool.

Al Davis was not the genius that he was back in the 70s.It was clear to all Russell was not going to be good in the NFL.But when Al had a thought in his head no one could change his mind.

Russell had a ridiculously strong arm and Davis loved the deep ball.

The wheels were set in motion when the Raiders chose Fabian Washington with the 23rd overall pick in the 2005, instead of Aaron Rodgers. Had the Raiders selected Rodgers, there would have been no need to draft JaMarcus Russell, and instead would have had a choice between Calvin Johnson, Joe Thomas, and Adrian Peterson.

Source(s): By drafting Russell, the Raiders only compounded their 2005 draft mistake.
