Nearly as good as fresh, handy / easier to get, longer use by date.

I am a chef. The Only canned foods you will find in My pantry are canned tomatoes-since the season is short. Pasta. Well even chef's don't make it fesh all the time-boxed is good enough. But for whole meals? Never. Everything else is made fresh.

If you are referring to pre-packaged, processed foods put together and cooked in a factory, then you would be healthier not eating them.  Make your own.  Pre-packaged foods often have preservatives and additives added to them so they have a long shelf life.  Doesn't mean they have a high nutrition level.  They taste mighty good, though, don't they?  I like a bag of Doritos much as the next guy (er, girl).  But they often include taste enhancers like MSG, salt, sugar and fat, so you end up eating a whole lot more of them than you should.  Ramen noodle soup is a classic example of a prepackaged food.  Not much nutrition in it, but it will make good mac and cheese in a hurry.  Then again, Velveeta isn't real cheese, either.  have you looked at the ingredient labels?  If you want to avoid getting diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver, kidney stones, gallbladder disease, high blood pressure, morbid obesity and cancer, it's a wises thing to choose to avoid pre-packaged, processed foods.  If you have to eat deli meat, get it sliced from the deli counter, not packaged in the lunchmeat section.  Make your own soup instead of opening a can of Campbells.

Pre packed food is a big BIG PROBLEM today due to the packaging waste. I don't agree with it AT ALL. The big BIG PROBLEM IS, we don't have a choice. DO WE?

  • Packaged is a pretty broad term. If you are thinking of dry goods, I use tons of packaged products - canned beans, pasta, mayonnaise, mustard, pickles, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, flour, baking powder and soda, dried herbs and spices, oil, panko, dried beans, oatmeal, vinegar, nuts, canned tomatoes, tea and coffee. I also buy crackers and cookies. I don't buy any mixes or pre-made food.

I think the things I buy make cooking great homemade, healthy meals much easier to do.

I avoid them. They often have many of the natural nutrient either destroyed or removed, and there are usually all sorts of chemical additives to preserve them (so nothing can grow on them .. including you) and/or artificial flavors.

I cook, as much as possible, entirely from scratch using fresh whole ingredients. I don't bother to buy organic fruits and vegetables but I do avoid packaged foods as much as possible.

I have no problem with packaged food. I live alone, I don't like to cook, so most often I will eat a packaged item rather than something fresh or home made. Not always, but generally.

I have no thoughts at all about “packaged food in general”.
