Why do carpool lanes exist?

I understand the purpose of carpooling, it saves money and fuel by getting more than one person to a destination. What I don’t understand is why a car with more than one person gets their own special lane. However I do understand bus lanes. Buses carry very many people and they’re so big so they need a lane entirely to themselves for safety and efficiency. Same thing goes for motorcycles, for safety. In my opinion, carpoolers aren’t any more special than single travelers. They don’t deserve their own special low traffic lane... carpool lanes should be for motorcycles and buses....  not sedans and SUVs full of Karens and snotty nose brats....

It is called the carrot and stick method.

To encourage good behaviour (extra passenger) you get to use a usually faster

    lane.

Very true buses carry more than a car can but there is still lots of left over space for cars with more than one passenger.

If you want the truth, follow the money.

Having more than one person per four wheels means the Government does not have to build more lanes.
