A republic is both a process and, in a physical manifestation, a blueprint in place.

A republic has a Constitution that provides a layer of protection for minority and unpopular views.  Representatives make the laws, and evaluate and appoint higher level prospective judges who in turn fit specific cases' facts to the laws and Constitution.

Direct democracy elects officials to execute laws that the voters pass, but majority or mob rule is a problem--a reason for the Electoral College in the U.S., another layer of protection, as different States have different cultures and economies, and their minority perspectives are somewhat shielded from direct majoritarian rule.

Term limits might be helpful in either a republic or a democracy, provided that unelected bureaucrats would have term limits as well.

A republic is a government that is claimed to be ran by the public.

A direct democracy would be the ultimate form of republic.

However there are lesser forms of democracy that could still meet the criteria for a type of republic.

However, the only hardcore rule, is that a republic "cannot" in any circumstance, have a monarch or dictator.

A republic is strongly opposed to head of state figures.

"A republic (Latin: res publica, meaning "public affair") is a form of government in which the country is considered a "public matter", not the private concern or property of the rulers. The primary positions of power within a republic are attained through democracy or a mix of democracy with oligarchy and/or autocracy, rather than being unalterably occupied. It has become the opposing form of government to a monarchy and has therefore no monarch as head of state.[1][2][3]".

The best example i can think of, of an empire that went from a Republic, to a head of state worshipping entity during the reign of Julius Caesar, was the Roman republic.

Julius Caesar turned the Roman empire on it's head when he usurped power away from the republicans, and announced himself emperor, before being announced God, after his death.

Julius Caesar "was everything" the Roman republic should have been against.
