Should I consider getting rid of my smart phone if I'm addicted to it in college?

I'm a student that's in college and I have a very hard time finding the motivation to work, especially now that we're in a pandemic and I'm currently studying at home (and will be at home again next semester).

I'm on my phone for like 9-11 hours a day, which is WAY too much time to spend on my phone. Most of that time is spent on the internet because my mind feels like a search engine: it just is constantly wanting to look up stuff out of curiosity, from YouTube videos to searching up random little questions on the internet.

I also spend a lot of time playing a bunch of little apps. I'll tell myself "I'll play for 15 minutes and then get right back to work" and then that turns into 2 hours.

My grades in college absolutely suck (I've never had a 3 or 4 credit course where I've gotten an A, aside from a college writing class that everyone is required to take) because my GPA is a 2.7 or 2.8 and I'm a sophomore. The way my motivation is looking for this semester, it looks like my semester GPA will roughly be a 2.0. I know this likely means I won't be able to study abroad during my junior year unless I pull a nearly perfect GPA, which I feel like is impossible with the way I'm distracted.

I know that in this day in age, it just seems normal for students to have a smartphone. But I feel like the fact that I spend 10+ hours on it per day is extremely unhealthy. I'm considering leaving social media and swapping my smart phone for one that simply calls/texts. Thoughts?

Seriously dysfunctional! Your phone nonsense is wrecking your education, and you don't seem to be able to set priorities & do what you need to do. Get rid of that phone! Ditch that social media! Problem is, it sounds like you'll take up computer games on your laptop or some other equally dysfunctional nonsense. What's really going on here? WHY are you sabotaging yourself & your education? Why are you so disorganized, so procrastinating, so lacking in self-discipline?

Well it's better than being addicted to crack.

Source(s): Smartphones are the new crack. Prohibition 2020. Smartphone speakeasies and illegal cellphone stores everywhere.

IF that is the only way you can control yourself, maybe.  The problem is that you can access most of the junk you are consuming via your phone via your computer.

I'd suggest you start with the following:

    1. Lock, yes lock, your phone somewhere during the day or during your study hours. Give your mother or father the key.  You only get your phone back when you're done with school work.

    2. Leave your phone out of your bedroom at night.  If you need an alarm, buy an old-fashioned one.

    3. Get more sleep.  You'll be more focused, energized, and motivated if you are getting the right amount of sleep -- which you will be able to do if you don't take your phone to bed.

    4. Make a more detailed schedule for yourself that includes realistic break times, walks around the block or exercise, and even phone/social media time. Keep to your schedule.

I'm pretty sure you can survive just fine if you unsubscribe and delete your social media apps.  You may discover you're not really missing anything.  Try it for a couple of months and see what happens.
