Should I consider getting rid of my smart phone if I'm addicted to it in college?
I'm a student that's in college and I have a very hard time finding the motivation to work, especially now that we're in a pandemic and I'm currently studying at home (and will be at home again next semester).
I'm on my phone for like 9-11 hours a day, which is WAY too much time to spend on my phone. Most of that time is spent on the internet because my mind feels like a search engine: it just is constantly wanting to look up stuff out of curiosity, from YouTube videos to searching up random little questions on the internet.
I also spend a lot of time playing a bunch of little apps. I'll tell myself "I'll play for 15 minutes and then get right back to work" and then that turns into 2 hours.
My grades in college absolutely suck (I've never had a 3 or 4 credit course where I've gotten an A, aside from a college writing class that everyone is required to take) because my GPA is a 2.7 or 2.8 and I'm a sophomore. The way my motivation is looking for this semester, it looks like my semester GPA will roughly be a 2.0. I know this likely means I won't be able to study abroad during my junior year unless I pull a nearly perfect GPA, which I feel like is impossible with the way I'm distracted.
I know that in this day in age, it just seems normal for students to have a smartphone. But I feel like the fact that I spend 10+ hours on it per day is extremely unhealthy. I'm considering leaving social media and swapping my smart phone for one that simply calls/texts. Thoughts?
3 AnswersHigher Education (University +)5 months agoWhy do I itch all over after using the toilet?
Whenever I use the toilet, whether I’m peeing or pooping or both, while I’m using the toilet, my body will itch all over the place. My legs and arms itch the most, but sometimes, my back and stomach will itch a bit too.
I’ve seen a lot of people talking about anal itching where their anus itches. My anus doesn’t itch when I poop, but my legs and arms will itch very irritably.
Keep in mind that I’ve had this happen in multiple different bathrooms before, so this isn’t just a case where it happened in one certain bathroom.
I don’t know if this is just my skin being too dry or some allergic thing or something completely different. Why do I itch all over after using the toilet?
1 AnswerSkin Conditions6 months agoHow can anyone work 40+ hours a week and not hate their life?
Alright, so I’ll be honest. I’m in college right now and I absolutely hate it. If we were all given good paying jobs after high school, sure, I wouldn’t go to college. But these days, you can’t have a good job without a college degree. Like the only reason I’m in college is to just get my degree and get out of there. Think of me as someone like Jeff Winger from Community.
This past year was my freshman year and I did not do well. I have like a 2.8 GPA and struggle a lot in my courses. I had to drop an Intro to CompSci course at the last minute because I would’ve failed it if I didn’t drop it (I dropped it towards the end of the semester). Now, I have to retake it in the fall since it’s required for all math majors.
I was not able to work 8 hours for 5 days a week. I couldn’t cope with the idea of bearing that stress. I dealt with serious depression and I’m worried I’ll just hate myself even more if I work 40 hours a week.
I’ve been worrying about the idea of doing the same thing almost every day for the rest of my life, and I HATE the idea. I’m stressing way too much on this (I usually stress way too much in general) and don’t know what I want to do anymore.
For those with full time jobs, how bad is it? Because I feel like working that sort of schedule would make me want to kill myself.
23 AnswersHigher Education (University +)9 months agoIs C2-G4 a good vocal range for a 19-year old male?
So I don’t take vocal lessons nor have I done choir or anything like that, but over the past few years, I’ve enjoyed singing music just for the fun of. About 5 years ago, My voice was quite a bit higher than that of mine today, but while I have been able to hit lower notes than I used to, I’ve also been able to sing higher notes than I would not have been able to sing 5 years ago.
Right now, I can sing notes as low as C2 and as high as A4. I didn’t count A4 in my vocal range because it’s my “Shaggy note”, the vote which cracks my voice and is the point which separates my inside voice from my falsetto.
I can’t use falsetto very well, but it seems like if I practice using falsetto, I can be able to sing notes like an A5.
So is my vocal range pretty good for someone my age?

I've seen videos of these and these things look hilarious. I was wondering if it is legal to perform a Chinese fire drill or if this sort of behavior can result in a ticket.
4 AnswersLaw & Ethics9 months agoInstagram DMs won’t be marked as read?
So on an Instagram account of mine, I am having an issue regarding DMs, and there are two parts to the issue
1. I am not able to see any new DMs from others
2. Whenever I read a DM that was unread before the bug took place, if I refresh the messages page, that same message returns to being unread, almost as if I didn’t read it in the first place
Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
-I restarted my phone
-I uninstalled the app, then reinstalled
-I cleared the app data of the app
-I turned off the WiFi, then turned it back on
-I changed my network to see if it was an issue with the network or the app. Still didn’t work
-I logged out of the account and logged back in
I am unable to check if I can access my DMs through my computer because this account is one that is affiliated with my main account (in other words, this account isn’t an independent account and doesn’t have its own password)
If anyone that ran into something similar knows what’s up, please let me know. Thank you.
Other - Internet10 months agoWhat are some 80s sounding synth pop songs in 2020?
To give you an idea of what sort of music I’m looking for, listen to “Closer” by Tegan and Sara, as well as “Right Back to You” by Electric Youth. It appears both bands have gone on to more 2010s style synth pop, which I’m not as huge a fan of.
Any recommendations for 2020s songs that have that synth pop feel would be great!
3 AnswersRock and Pop10 months agoWhat is my religion?
I grew up as a Catholic, but last year, after going through a bout of serious depression and scientific questioning, I became an atheist. However, I’ve had an interesting set of beliefs that I don’t believe is common among individuals.
Here’s what I don’t believe:
1. I do not believe there is a supernatural God that created the Earth within a week
2. I do not believe there is heaven nor hell, nor do I believe in any form of an afterlife. I believe that once you die, you will cease to exist in the same way that you did before birth.
3. I do not believe in some literal bible stories. For example, I do not believe that there was a flood that killed every being that was not on Noah’s Ark, or that Adam and Eve were the first two humans.
What I DO believe, however, is that there was a man named Jesus who was just as supernatural as every one of us: not at all. I do believe, however, that Jesus, along with others mentioned in the Bible, were rather intellectual.
I believe the tales told in the Bible are not literal, but rather lessons for each of us to learn so that we can lead happy healthy lives. For example, the tale of Adam and Eve teaches us to not be greedy.
I believe that heaven is figurative for looking back at the end of life and being happy that you made a positive impact at the end of your life, while hell is figurative for regretting poor life decisions.
With that said, would I be a christian, an atheist, something in between, or a different religion altogether?
16 AnswersReligion & Spirituality11 months agoHelp with parametric formulas?
So I was given x = t^3 - 3t and x = t^2 - 8.
I needed to find the points along the parametric curve where there were horizontal and vertical tangents.
I. Horizontal:
(Step 1: Set dx/dt = 0 to find t)
dx/dt = 3t^2 - 3
0 = 3t^2 - 3
3 = 3t^2
1 = t^2
t = +/- 1
(Step 2: Check that dy/dt doesn't equal 0 for the t-values, and find the x- and y-values for each t-value by plugging t into the original equations for x and y)
dy/dt = 2t doesn't = 0 @ +/- 1
t=1:
x = 1-3 = -2
y = 1-8 = -7
t=-1:
x = -1+3 = 2
y = 1-8 = -7
(Step 3: State your points where the curve has a horizontal tangent)
Therefore, the curve has horizontal tangents at (-2, -7) and (2, -7)
I then applied similar steps to horizontal tangents.
II. Vertical:
dy/dt = 2t
0 = 2t
t = 0
dx/dt = 3t^2 - 3 doesn't = 0 @ 0
x = 0
y = 0-8 = -8
Therefore, the curve has a horizontal tangent at (0, -8).
I thought what I was doing was correct, but when I went to check, I was incorrect in both cases. I feel like I'm missing an important step, but don't know what this could be.
1 AnswerMathematics12 months agoHelp with CompSci project?
So I'm working on a project for CompSci. The project is basically to create a game where the computer chooses a letter (W, X, Y, or Z) four times and the person that runs the program has to guess the word. It would tell you how many letters you got correct and how many guesses you have left.
Right now, I'm trying to make the computer generate the four-letter sequence. I did the code as such (ignore the earlier code as I did it correctly):
String word;
for (int x = 0; x < 4; x++) {
x = rand.nextInt(4);
The problem is when I tried to compile the code, it says the int cannot be dereferenced. I looked up what this issue means and it seems like I'm using int when I shouldn't be, but I can't see what the problem is.
I don't know if the problem is that I'm using the for loop incorrectly or if I don't quite understand the rand.nextInt() part. Any assistance would be excellent.
2 AnswersProgramming & Design1 year agoFundamental Theorem of Calculus. Help?
So on a quiz, I was asked to find the derivative of the integral from 0 to ln(7) of e^(2x) dx.
A. e^2ln(7) - e^0
B. 0
C. ln(7)
D. e^2ln(7)
When I was taught the first part of the fundamental theorem of calculus, I sort of thought of it as "if you see a zero in the derivative of an integral, f*** that zero and go to the non-zero number. Otherwise, split into two integrals and f*** the two zeroes." With that logic, I put down D. It was somehow wrong.
I am stumped as to how in the world I was wrong. I looked online using a derivative calculator and it said the answer was 48, which is equal to A. But why would I care about e^0 when I thought I was supposed to move on from the zero whenever a zero popped up in a derivative of an integral equation.
If you're one of those people who knows the answer and is willing to share with explanation, feel free to share. If you're one of those who will help me get a better understanding of FTOC (which I have a hard time understanding) and lead me to, but not directly tell me, the correct answer, that's also fine.
2 AnswersMathematics1 year agoWill rock, or even rock-influenced pop, return to the mainstream in the Roaring 20s?
It wasn’t too long ago when Billboard ranked the top 10 rock songs of the 2010s. Those 10 songs, however, were not rock songs. High Hopes? Thunder? Feel It Still? Don’t get me wrong, some of the songs on the list, I actually really like, but none of the songs on that list are rock songs. Do you think that this new decade will see the return of rock music to the mainstream, or even pop that is much more influenced by rock than hip-hop, unlike today’s music?
5 AnswersRock and Pop1 year agoWhen did 2010s music start sounding like 2010s music?
So today, I was listening to Kelly Clarkson's 2011 album Stronger. The album sounded like it fit in with a lot of her earlier albums like Breakaway and All I Ever Wanted. The most 2000s song on the album had to be "Standing In Front of You". I looked back at the past decade and wondered as to when 2010s music started to truly define itself rather than sounding like the music of the 2000s.
For me, personally, 2010 definitely sounded very 2000s, but there were some very big things that defined the 2010s that happened that decade (Bruno Mars hits the mainstream, as does Neon Trees, OneRepublic's new album, CeeLo really hitting the mainstream for the first time since his Gnarls Barkley days, etc etc).
2011 and 2012 came closer to the 2010s in terms of music, but still had bits and pieces of 2000s.
I would say that 2010s music really defined itself in 2013 or 2014. By this time, Maroon 5 started straying from rock music towards pop, Katy Perry's album also was way more pop based, OneDirection became the "new Beatles", and many acts made names out of themselves because of their sounds.
This, of course, is my own personal opinion. I'm curious as to when you thought 2010s music strayed from the 2000s to define itself rather than being like a twin brother.
1 AnswerRock and Pop1 year agoGirl asked if I was going to a frat party?
Basically, this semester, a girl I didn’t know too well asked me if I was going to a frat party that was happening that night. She told me to let me know if I went to that party. I didn’t think about it too much but now I think that she was really interested in me, but idk. Do you think she sounded interested in me and wanted us to become more than friends?
2 AnswersSingles & Dating1 year agoMeaning of All American Rejects’ “Beekeeper’s Daughter”?
So I’m making a playlist about songs to basically say “f*** you” to my ex and I’m thinking of adding this song because I thought it was about this guy who was like “screw you”. I found some sources that said that it was about this one crazy guy who basically thinks he can have whatever, but I don’t know if this is true. Can anyone help?
1 AnswerLyrics2 years agoHow does paying for college work?
So I’m currently in the process of hearing back from colleges I applied to. My father attended three years of college on a full ride and my mother only attended community college for one year, so neither one of them knew much about paying for college. We all thought that you could pay whatever and take out loans and then the rest is debt on the student. However, it turns out that it doesn’t look like that’s the case as they found out something like how you can’t go into debt for this and whatever loans you can take out is it. My parents make roughly $170k a year and they’re only giving me $10k per year. I really want to go out of state for college, but after finding this news out, it might be impossible for me to go to my dream school: CU Boulder, which would be $40,000 a year due to my Presidential Scholarship from them. Is what I’m hearing true and that if my parents won’t be willing to pay off that much, it will be impossible for me to attend that college?
1 AnswerFinancial Aid2 years agoCan we please use questions in a respectable manner?
Look, I’m speaking this out because it seems that this “politics” section has gotten a little out of hand. The purpose of Yahoo Answers is that people who are curious about questions ask them and they get answers and whichever answer answers their question best gets awarded best answer. Unfortunately, a majority of the people use questions as a way to say “I’m going to blast the other party.” This goes for both Republicans AND Democrats. If you’re going to ask a question, ask a reasonable one. “Would Michelle Obama be a good president?” is a good example. “Libtards are stupid. Don’t you agree?” isn’t. Oh, and before you go blasting about me, I’m a moderate seeking to stop the widening gap between both sides and actually hope to unite them so that America doesn’t split up or go to hell. Now, can we all please treat this section of Yahoo Answers with respect to the other side? Because if you can’t, you should just go off to another site because debating the hell out of the other side is not the purpose of Yahoo Answers.
7 AnswersPolitics2 years agoAm I pro or anti gun?
So personally, I can see why someone would want to have firearms in their homes for the purposes of protecting their family or for hunting. However, I feel that you don’t need assault rifles to do such things and that assault rifles should only be limited to those in the military. Basically, I support the second amendment but I feel that we need stricter gun laws so that things like Parkland, Aurora, Columbine, etc. don’t happen again. That said, would I be pro or anti gun?
9 AnswersLaw & Ethics2 years agoI’m feeling depressed and hopeless and need help?!?
I’m at a point where I feel like I’m not good at anything and life is hopeless for me.
1. I’m currently pulling a C- and a C+ out of two classes. The C- comes from AP Calc AB and the C+ from Honors Physics. I’m worried that with those grades, colleges will send me a letter saying that they take back my acceptance.
2. I am not very close to anyone because I moved here during the summer before junior year. I have lots of friends, but no very close ones. I am also a strong introvert and I think I’m on the autism spectrum because when I was younger, doctors knew that something was wrong when all the kids were on the slides while I was looking at math flash cards.
3. I am a musician that auditioned for districts (basically for the county) and got a mediocre score. A lot of people thought I was really going to get in, but I got a stupid score that wasn’t even close to the score to get in. Seeing as this was my only chance to audition before high school, it especially sucks that I’m the only senior that auditioned and 1) didn’t get in and 2) didn’t get an All State recommendation.
4. Relating to the last point, I auditioned for the school’s musical. There were 4 violins, 2 violists (one was me), and 2 cellos. I thought I did really well and thought I was going to get in because someone said everyone gets in. Apparently, everyone but me and a cello got in and I was deeply depressed.
I just need help because I’m worried this could lead to me going insane, or worse, ending my life
