What do I need to record music on a budget?
I'm interested in recording music, considering I'm stuck at home because of COVID. Any microphone recommendations? Also, what equipment would I need to pull this off? I'm not talking an elaborate studio, but enough to record tracks that sound quality. I have a laptop already. Is an Audio Interface necessary? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

don't buy a walmart brand microphone, but you don't need a multi-hundred dollar one either. just a good $50-70 one from best buy or amazon is fine.
you won't get great quality from a laptop. for best quality, a desktop that you can add a basic sound card is best. SoundBlaster Z for the win! i have a Zx, which adds a bunch of ports and an external hub that is easily maneuverable, but if you don't need it, the basic Z is fine.
lastly, you can just use Audacity to record/edit audio. it's great quality, and supports export to plenty of formats. WAV or FLAC is best quality, with 320k mp3 next in line.

For recording software I would suggest "Audacity", it's a powerful audio recorder/editor, and it's free. You should have a microphone jack on the laptop (forget the built in mic!), so buy the best compatible microphone you can afford. With those you should be able to do Multi-track recording like Les Ford. If you want to use multi-mic set-up you will need a basic microphone mixer as well.
