Does a bookkeeper certification last forever or does it expire and need to be renewed?

I passed my bookkeeper certification exam last August after being part of a program that paid for my college courses.  With this year almost over I am worried that it may run out.  But if a certification is permanent once you get it I would like to know that I have nothing to worry about.  It was a pain to have to complete the exam the first time and since I don't have a job due to COVID-19 happening this year, I don't have the money to pay to retake the exam.

Generally, any certification must be renewed on an annual basis.

Go back to the organization that certified you. You may have a continuing education requirement and may have to pay an annual fee to keep your certification.

If you are working with a certification, yes...if you are not continuously employed as a bookkeeper, you will need to be recertified yearly to prove that you still have up to date skills.

However if you have either a 2 year or 4 year accounting degree from a college or University, that is PERMANENT and you can leave a bookkeeping job in 2020 - work as a tap dancer for a year, and then apply for another bookkeeping job and not have to go back to college and take classes to be recertified to be hired.

    I don't believe so.

However, to keep your certification, you will probably have to take Continuing Education classes each year which can be few hundred dollars per yer.
