Why did Italy change sides in WWII?

I've taken an interest in history but can't find a direct answer online.. I can't seem to put together what happened? I can tell that Benito Mussolini had something to do with it, I'm sure I've gathered that he an Hitler had a good relationship but what happened for them to turn against Germany and switch to the allies halfway through the war?

By 1943 there were two Italys.

The Kingdom of Italy ruled by King Victor Emmanuel III  was a member of the Axis powers but after seeing themselves losing many battles decided to sack PM Mussolini and declare an armistace and joiined the allies.

The other Italy, further north , The Italian Socialist Republic, was effectivly a puppet state of Germany with Mussolini as the leader.  After many more losses he became very unpopular and was captured and killed by Italians in 1945 just before the end of the war in Europe.

At the beginning of 1943, Italy was facing defeat. The collapse of the African front on 4 November 1942 and the Allied landings in North Africa on 8–12 November exposed Italy to an invasion of the Allied forces. The defeat of the Italian expeditionary force (ARMIR) in Russia, the heavy bombings of the cities, and the lack of food and fuel demoralized the population, the majority of whom wanted to end the war and denounce the alliance with Germany.

One reason is that Mussolini dragged the Italians into an unpopular  war with the British who had been their allies in WW 1.

Italy was run by a Regime similar to the Nazis they were fascists that had strange ideals Musoulini was the dictator he was hard and cruel and lots of Italians suffered under his power , and many were not happy in this state so the seeds of doubt were always there and the partnership With Hitler was with mainly military ambitions , they were ordered to support Germany in North Africa but the Germans didnt have the respect needed and they failed from lack of support and gained a bad reputation as cowards they were and are not , they did not have the commitment and that broke down and the Germans were shooting them if they retreated or refused to fight especially on the retreat through Italy , they ruled the world as Romans hardly a poor pedigree

When you realise you are beaten, the reasonable course of action is to admit it and accept it.
