I have been using xfinity Wifi On Demand, but that is now ending. Can anyone recommend a provider that does not require a satellite or cable connection?

It would help if we knew where you live. You need to ask the Internet Service Providers in your area.

check your local phonebook, or ask your neighbors what they use.

That depends entirely on where you live. DSL is an alternative as is fiber internet service or a wireless internet service provider (WISP). You'll have to look around your area to see what other providers, if any, are available and what services they may offer.
