"I see that you like INSERT SUBJECT HERE. I'm into that too. Let's talk about it". If you have nothing in common with someone it's usually impossible to do more than just say hello and maybe talk about the weather.

smile and be friendly - this puts people at ease. Asking questions is a good way to indicate to people that you are interested in them, but at first, it also can make people nervous.. so, if a person is shy, don't put them on the spot with lots of questions.. talk about yourself - something self-depreciating is always going to make them feel more comfortable.

For eg. when I meet new people, I smile, say how glad I am to meet them, but then say something like, "I'm not good with directions and got lost on the way over here!" Of course, all comments need to be true and sincere.. all I am really saying is that when you talk about yourself, don't be talking about how great you are. :-) I went on a date with a guy who felt he had to tell me how great his career was, how many girls he had dated, how much money he made etc.. and it did not make me feel willing to open up about my life..
