what are the squareish holes in the bottom of my water heater?

our very very old water heater is leaking, but we can't find from where. while feeling around the bottom, i found very deliberate squareish holes on its underside, where it's raised off the attic floor and sitting in a pan. what are these holes for, and could they be the problem? they are not rusted. i was going to just ducttape the whole underside of the tank while we wait 2 days for the replacement tank to arrive, but these holes feel deliberate so i'm guessing that would be a bad idea. i want to know what they are but can't find anything on google.

Don't tape anything up.  Tape wouldn't hold anyway. Just keep your eye on the leak.  You don't want it to suddenly become a gusher.  Then you've really got problems.  Its surprising you have to wait two days.  It's a simple job for a plumber so they usually give same day service

Your water heater is sitting in a pan for just that reason, leakage.  There should be a drain tube that runs from the pan to a nearby drain, so nothing will be harmed.  don't tape it up, as these are most likely vents, and are needed.  Wait for the new one, and get it installed.  You may note that the new one also has vents.  Nothing to worry about.

got some new info and i'm guessing these holes are air intakes for the gas burner?
