Why do people think chivalry isn’t sexist?

I think people confuse chivalry with common courtesy, let me explain chivalry is being considerate and courteous to women while common courtesy is being considerate and courteous to everyone regardless of gender so the former is sexist since according to my dictionary sexism is discrimination against people especially women, on the basis of sex.

"Why do people think chivalry isn’t sexist?"

A quick history on this.  There is classic chivalry, or true chivalry which may be "sexist" in the modern sense in that it treats the sexes differently with different expectations.  However, this is not sexist in the classic sense, because it provides benefits with obligations.  Women must aspire to be ladies in order to receive gentlemanly behaviour under classic chivalry.  So both parties receive something for something, and the entire society is uplifted with the advent of ladies and gentleman rather than guys & girls.

Then there is the turn of the last century chivalry from our post classic (1st wave) feminist age.  This feminism gave women the choice to drop their traditional obligations to men and the society but did not afford men that same option.  This "chivalry" sought for women to receive the benefits of chivalry from gentleman without women having to act like ladies.

A further change occurred during the corporate financed hijacked 2nd wave feminism in the 1970's (Women's Liberation) whereby those feminists demanded equality, and would scold a man for holding the door open for a women, because that was not "equality" (equal treatment).  This didn't last long as feminism was getting a bad name with these public actions and they knew it.

And finally modern "chivalry" which has been redefined to be nothing but good manners and politeness.  This is what appears to have been taught to school children over the last couple of decades in keeping with feminist revisionist history in order to radically change society in ways the benefit that ideology.

So any "chivalry" that demands something from men, without any similar action from women, OR corresponding alternate duty from women, can be said to be sexist.

Your wrong this is not chivalry at all.  chivalry means: 1: mounted men-at-arms

… the eleven kings with their chivalry never turned back …

    — Thomas Malory

     or gallant or distinguished gentlemen

So you see has to do with bravery nothing about women at all.

@Neptune2bsure: Yeah, men have just been talking about chivalry towards women well before you were born for no good reason. Feminists are something else with the lies they spread around. lol

@Cogito: Once again, chivalry is not about being nice and polite to women. Chivalry is about the protection of women. If feminists are going to argue against something they might want to learn what it is first. Confusing chivalry with kindness shows a profound ignorance of the topic and is a good reason to ignore everything you say on the topic.

    Answer:

Sexism is a term that was created by the feminist movement and used to manipulate topics of discussion and debate to get their way. The term itself has no value to someone that doesn't follow the feminist ideology or care if something is seen as objectionable to feminists.

Chivalry works off the natural inclinations of men and women by providing men a way to protect those he loves while giving women the feeling of being cared for and protected by the man in her life. In short, both men and women get a positive emotional return from the behavior because it fills a need that both men and women have. Calling chivalry sexist is effectively calling human instinct sexist, which to be frank is just stupid.

Very few are going to throw a fit if someone holds a door open for them. The bottom line is that there are some very unhappy individuals amongst us who just go through life looking for a fight.

The word 'chivalry' is very rarely used nowadays.

It really means the medieval knightly system with its religious, moral, and social code and has nothing to do with women and is not sexist at all.  However, it was, in more recent times, used to refer to men being polite and considerate towards women.  Nowadays, politeness, courtesy and consideration towards others are the expressions we use and they apply to everyone.
