Masturbation is a natural way for people to relieve stress or built-up sexual tension. Some people do it for those reasons, others do it because it can be a rather addictive thing, especially since having an orgasm releases endorphins into the body, a naturally produced chemical reaction in everyone that feels good and reduces pain temporarily. As for when it started, probably since man first came to be. People have discovered masturbation themselves through exploring their own bodies, so it's safe to assume that's how it all originated.
