Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" (1954). An amazing film. IMO it's not just one of the best foreign films ever made, it's one of the greatest ever made, period.

My favorite is The Red Violin. It's a Canadian movie that follows a violin for 200 years across five countries and as many languages.

Other foreign favorites include: Amélie (French), Zatoichi (Japanese), Hero (Chinese), House of Flying Daggers (Chinese), The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (British, but set in India), and Waking Ned Devine (British, but set in Ireland).
