Car insurance is to create profits. Safety and common sense have no use.

Because most people are smart enough to know they need those items in their vehicle.

Liability insurance is required in case you damage someone else’s car or property. You don’t have to have collision insurance. If you are at fault for an accident, nobody cares about your car. If you get a flat, that’s your own problem. It’s a good idea to have a spare, but the only one who will suffer is you.

Car insurance is required to protect others, the general public.  Where I live (and I think in most places) only liability insurance is required by law.  Collision, comprehensive, etc. are up to you.

I've had a car shot out from under me by a guy who had no insurance.  He was 'judgement proof' so it was just my loss.

It's been suggested that we just raise gas taxes by a  nickel or so, and that would cover everyone for liability automatically.  You could buy other kinds of insurance but at least anyone who got in an accident would be covered.  I think that's a great idea.
