Because Trump made wearing a mask political instead of a health issue due to his vanity.

Real pandemics do not require a massive over-the-top propaganda campaign to get people to believe in them.

If the media wasn't constantly hyping it, would you even know that anything was amiss?  Probably not, although people working in health care might notice slightly more serious cases of pneumonia than usual.

A corporation that controls your food supply is not a "private business."  An organization with the power to coerce you isn't much different from a government.  Yes, "my body my choice" applies everywhere.
