What is behind the phenomenon described by J. J. Goldberg and Alan Dershowitz? Is it simply hard work and talent?

J. J. Goldberg, editorial director of the newspaper The Forward, in 1997 published a study of this myth regarding the United States,[39] concluding that, although Jews do hold many prominent positions in the U.S. media industry, they "do not make a high priority of Jewish concerns" and that Jewish Americans generally perceive the media as anti-Israel.[40]

Scholar Alan Dershowitz said of the subject: So let's stop all this nonsense about Jewish control over the media and praise those individual Jews who, by dint of hard work and talent, have earned their place, as individuals, in so many areas of American life. I always thought that was the American dream.[50] .

J. J Goldberg whom is himself Jewish admits that Jews do hold many prominent positions in the U.S. media.

Scholar Alan Dershowitz whom is also Jewish says that it is simply because those Jews are hard working and full of talent that have earned their place as individuals.

Now let us not lie to ourselves. Judaism is a minority religion unlike Christianity and Islam and a disproportionate amount of Judaists find themselves in high society. I am not saying this is because of any nefarious conspiracy. Is there something about Judaism or Jewishness that makes Jews more hard working and talented than Christians, Muslims and Atheists?

Two thousands years of living under a constant threat of having your property confiscated or getting thrown out of your home and having looking for a new place to live taught Jews knew that the only things that couldn't be taken away from them were their skills and knowledge.  If you knew how to sew clothes, for example, you could make a living as a tailor in Germany, Poland, or Russia. You could always start over anywhere you settled.  In the Middle Ages, when only nobility and clergy knew how to read and write, Jews had nearly 100% literacy rate, even among women.

Consider the US of 1900-1920 when the Jews from Easter Europe came to the US in large numbers fleeing the widespread pogroms.  They were poor, with little education, not knowing the English language.  At the time hardly anyone would have said that Jews controlled anything.

But the Jewish immigrants made sure that their children got good education.  When the law firms refused to hire Jewish lawyers, they established their own firms and started winning cases in court. When the newspapers didn't hire Jewish reporters, they started their own newspapers.

Probably not but consider who different people look up to. Figures in entertainment? Sports? Fashion? Or scholars?
