NASA vs Space Force?

If you find logistics to be an exciting career path and are willing to join the military, then consider Space Force.  You won't be directly fighting anyone or anything - asteroids included.  Space Force, as a military branch, uses our assets in space to support the other branches of the military.

There is a lot of misconception about what Space Force actually is.  It is not Space Marines a-la Spaceship Troopers fighting aliens.  There will be no patrolling of the space trade routes.  There will be no zapping of asteroids or any other stuff you see in Science Fiction.  

The US military depends on a wide variety of spacecraft for navigation, communication, reconnaissance, and weather forecasting.  Drawing up the requirements for these assets, overseeing the design, procurement, launching and operating these assets and distributing their products among the users was spread out among different services, but the part of each service that dealt with space was sort of an orphan child within the service.  There was also a lot of inefficiency and inter-service rivalry.   Before there was GPS, for example, the Navy operated a constellation of navigation satellites called Transit, and it was not happy about transferring the responsibility for it the to the Air Force.

The Space Force is established within the US Air Force, much like the US Marines is an arm of the US Navy.  As such, it has a seat on the Joint Chiefs of Stuff.  It took responsibility for managing the development, procurement, launching, operating and defending the US military space assets for all services.

No.  The US Space Force oversees the development, procurement and construction of US military satellites and operates space launch facilities and satellite tracking stations  It does not track near-Earth asteroids.  That is the responsibility of NASA.

Oh, and by the way, there is no asteroid coming in 2029.  The Apophis will pass millions of miles from Earth.  The Apophis scare is brought to us by the same people who brought us the 2012 Mayan Calendar End of the World hoax.  Watch out for them trying to sell you space in an "Asteroid-proof Shelter at an Undisclosed Location which will be revealed to you a few days before the impact."  Come 2030 you will find that they, along with you money, have relocated to "Undisclosed Locations."

The Space Force, because space exploration should be territorial. Nothing is more territorial than the military. We ought to become a multi-world species as fast as possible.

What a lot of dumbasses THINK is the US Space Force is Trump's brain child.  It's not.

The US Space Command was established in 1986 in Colorado Springs, CO.  Google it.

FWIW, NASA's mission is space exploration.  The US Space Force is definitely something to be a part of in the future.
