weeks before anybody heard the name "George Floyd" there were city-owned lots around Los Angeles full of things like orange cones, portable K-rail and flashing traffic signs....all the things you'd need if you had to block streets and seal off neighborhoods...
friends in Chicago, New York and other cities said they notice the same thing.... like me, they also noticed an increase in road rage incidents, fist fights in retail shops and parking lots...people shouting at each other on the streets...
as the original "two week shutdown" reached 8 weeks, it was almost as if cities knew that public anger would eventually boil over and were prepared for it...
and it wasn't just governments.... the thing that surprised me the most about the riot days in Los Angeles was the appearance of HUNDREDS of trucks full of plywood just ready to board up shops and whole streets...
the reason I mention this now is because I'm noticing the same vibe in the air as we pass the one year mark.... you notice the loudest governors of last summer have been awfully quiet.... you'll notice CA and NY rushing to push reopening as quickly as possible...
why? because that anger is definitely brewing again...a lot of people are upset that Trump got ousted and things didn't get magically better... in fact, reopening has actually been a "reawakening" for many...
as restaurants are open, more people are feeling the 20% to 40% increase in food prices .... as more people can travel, more are feeling the effects of $4 gas again...more bars mean more drinkers getting into each others faces every night...
assaults are up 40% - 50% over last year in LA, Chicago, NY and dozens of other cities.... a road rage incident makes the news here in LA almost nightly...drive too close to a cyclist and you're likely to get bombarded with profanity, if not small thrown objects...
people are angry....and that anger is bubbling again....just waiting for a trigger....
will being able to go to the theater and see a movie for $35 really be enough to keep people in line?
