I am an atheist, avid sailor and amateur astronomer. I consider my politics to be moderate - I am a fiscal conservative and social liberal. Bill Clinton is easily the best president in 20 years. George W. Bush is the worst president of all time. I have studied enough science in school and on my own to know that evolution is a fact and creationism/intelligent design is just regurgitated religious nonsense.
Whose prayers were answered on 9/11?
It's a hard question to face, for sure, but I think Christians must ask themselves this question:
On Sept. 11, 2001, there were two sets of fervent prayer: one set in the passenger cabin and another in the cockpit.
Whose were answered?
6 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoChristians: Would it both you to find a copy of The God Delusion in a hotel room you'd just check in to?
If your answer is "yes" - please explain how this is different than the reaction non-believers should have when opening the hotel nightstand to find a gift from the Gideons.

17 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoChristians: How many believe in a literal version of the Noah ark story?
This is a really interesting discussion of the whole thing:
http://ncse.com/cej/4/1/impossible-voyage-noahs-ar...
The ark was supposedly 450 feet, length over all (LOA), but ...
" ... there was an "upper limit, in the region of 300 feet, on the length of the wooden ship; beyond such a length the deformation due to the differing distributions of weight and buoyancy became excessive, with consequent difficulty in maintaining the hull watertight."
8 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoChristians: Would you support a comparative religion requirement in public schools?
... knowing that the more someone knows about religion in general, the more likely he/she is to be an atheist?
13 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoChristians: Why don't you believe in these miracles?
- The Buddha, using only his mind, created a golden bridge in the air, and walked up and down the bridge for an entire week.
- Mohammad split the moon.
- The virgin births of Krishna and Dionysus.
14 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoIf God knows the outcome, what's the point of the 'experiment'?
xians tie themselves in knots trying to explain that while God is omniscient, and therefore knows all our choices in advance, he still grants us free will to make those choices.
Aside from the fact that this is really a form of determinism (and it is, no matter how you try to escape it), the illusion might comfort us. But what does it do for God? If he knows the outcome, what is the point of running the data? There is none.

16 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoIf God already knows my choices, then why try to persuade me to change my ways?
At best, you're wasting your time; at worst, you are presuming on a supernatural being's "plan"
8 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoDoes God know the outcome of our "free will" decisions?
If so, there's no such thing as free will - it's an illusion within a deterministic universe.
If not, God is not omniscient.
21 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade ago72 virgins or just a bunch of grapes?
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/08/04/opinion/martyrs-...
"the Koran says martyrs going to heaven will get ''hur,'' and the word was taken by early commentators to mean ''virgins,'' hence those 72 consorts. But in Aramaic, hur meant ''white'' and was commonly used to mean 'white grapes.'"

6 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhy must Christians persist with the myth about "no atheists in foxholes"?
Pat Tillman was only the most famous atheist to have fought for his country. Here are some others:

2 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoIf the Bible is the inspired word of God and history of his relationship with mankind ,,,?
Conservative estimates have modern humans on Earth for the past 100,000 years.
So, did God just ignore all the killing, maiming, sin, etc. before finally saying stepping in 3,000 years ago to say, 'well, you there, now I'm in charge and you break it up!'
6 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoHow are Christians and atheists alike?
Christians are atheists about all of the thousands of gods of antiquity, save one. Atheists just go the extra mile.
