  • How do I send a Self-Addressed-Stamped-Envelope from USA to UK without IRC?

I'm trying to send a letter to the UK and need to supply an SASE for the reply. The postal service doesn't have international reply coupons anymore and the Royal Mail website won't ship stamps to the US. (Our post office won't ship stamps to them either). So, how do I proceed from here? Am I just SOL at this point?

  • Title and author of a sci-fi book I read years ago?

The story is this: A groups of students in a survival class get shipped through a teleport door to a planet for their final exam. The main character is a male whose family doesn't understand why he wants to take the course in the first place. The survival instructor warns him of a specific animal on the planet. A nova knocks out the transport mechanism and they are stuck. They are left there for two or more years and manage to create a thriving little town, after figuring out how to deal with the critter they had been warned about. Eventually they are found by civilization again and are pulled off the planet. The main character spends some awkward time with his family because he was happy on the planet and the rescue newscast painted the survivors all in a primitive light (literally as the rescue crew showed up in the middle of a hunt, the students were using spears and knives, the rescue crew actually painted some of the student's faces with a quick sneaky device before taking snapshots). In the end, the main character leads a group to colonize the planet officially. I thought the title had been something like "Window in the Sky" or "Door in the Sky" but I can't find it.

  • I'm trying to find an older movie, 1940s or 50s?

I don't recall the title but the storyline was like this:

A couple sailors made a bet that one of them couldn't get a kiss from the local hard-to-get girl before their ship left port. The story involved the main character trying to trick his way to getting this kiss with the help of his best friend. Eventually he tried to propose but the woman had been told about the bet and threw the ring out the window. He got mad because he'd acutally spent a lot on the ring and was seriously proposing. In the end they get married in a cab on the way to the pier to catch his ship and he gets his kiss on the dock in front of the crew and wins his bet anyway.

I know its an old movie because he said he paid about $25 on the ring and she reacted like it was a fortune. Any ideas?

  • Baptism and parental permission...?

I don't share religious views with my former in-laws but I don't have a problem with them taking my kids to church when they're visiting. A while back the kids visited for a few weeks and my oldest was baptised without my permission. He was only 7 at the time so he really had no idea what was going on. He did it because grandma wanted him to and grandpa encouraged it because he knew I'm not christian and would be upset. I don't have issue with the fact that my son was baptised, I'm upset that they didn't ask me first and their motives were biased.

In an area like this, not being Christian I really don't know the protocols. Shouldn't a parent of a young child be involved in baptism decisions?

  • How do I evaluate csc(2pi) without a calculator?

My trig class is only 50 minutes long and it seems like a lot of information is being glossed over. In a practice quiz the question above was asked and I just don't know how to work the problem. If you can show me how to get the right answer, or point me to a website with instruction I would be most grateful. Replies with just the answer to the equation won't get best answer points.

  • Overhanging porch, heavy packages, broken tiles?

Our apartment is on the second story with a porch built over the garages. It is tiled with some sort of granite/stone/slate tiles of around 12x12".

Recently one of the tiles was broken by a heavy toolbox my husband's job mailed him. Since this delivery is frequent we decided, after the tiles were replaced, to lay out a piece of plywood for the toolbox to be set on when delivered, to help defer the weight to more tiles than just the ones directly below it. The box weighs about 150lbs.

My landlady told me today that we have to remove the plywood as she was told by her contractor that it would break the tiles. I tried to explain to her our reasoning and that since my husband travels weekly and has to have the toolbox shipped where he goes, the heavy delivery will be frequent. She told us to have it left at the bottom of the stairs, where anyone can just walk away with more than a thousand dollars in specialized equipment if we're not home for the delivery.

Can anyone give me some ideas as to how to set up this porch so that the toolbox can be delivered without risking breaking her precious tiles or theft of the tools? She is insistent that the porch is not a "storage shed" so anything we set up has to look nice.

It doesn't need to be permanent. We are moving out in the summer.

  • Moving to Michigan...Jackson area?

We need to be about 30-45 min from East Lansing and around an hour from Detroit airport (college student and frequent flyer in household). We were looking at Jackson area and surrounding towns. Can anyone from that area tell us some good locations to look for a house, decent schools for middle and high school students, low crime (compared to other MI towns)?

  • Food supplies for group camping?

I'm going on a camping trip for 4-5 nights with a group of 8 people. Four of those will be kids 12 and under. The campsite will have bathroom facilities and cooking utensils (stove, pots and pans). My question is, without refrigerator access for 5-6 days (long drive to get there) what kind of food should we bring with us to allow for some variety? Which fresh foods will last the trip (veggies, fruits, meat)? Ideas on fireside meals would be appreciated too.

  • suddenly un-kidfriendly landlord?

My apartment building has 4 units. We have a very small ivy-lined walkway along the building that leads to three of the units, with a gate at each end. When we moved in and for the past three years those gates have had no handles and no springs, they just swung when pushed and rested at close. Recently the landlady had someone install handles and springs to keep the doors closed. Not a problem. But the latch she has added to one of them is too high for my kids to reach and she claims that it is her property so she doesn't have to alter it to fit our family. She also threatened one of our neighbor children, playmate to our kids, that she'd call the police on him for trespassing because he was on our side of the fence playing with our kids.

Apart from moving, because my husband is stubborn and won't move until we get a house, does anyone have suggestions on how to handle this situation?

  • Chainmail inlay patterns?

I've been to The Ring Lord. Does anyone know of any other sites to get inlay patterns for various chainmail weaves? Or specifically design patterns for bags or pouches? I'm looking to make something special for my husband and need some new ideas.

  • How do you deal with the new husband's ex and child visitation?

My husband's ex wife has full legal and physical custody of their 12 year old daughter because he didn't respond to the divorce paperwork. She had agreed that we get to have the girl visit alternating holidays and part of summer. This past summer summer they moved into a new house while the girl was with us. This is supposed to be our Christmas with the girl and now the ex is requesting that she stay with her as it is the first christmas in the new house and she missed the move in. She has made all our visits very painful to plan, requiring certain specific guidelines be followed as if we have no idea how to raise a child (I have two very polite and healthy boys ages 8 and 10), and now that we have declined to give her this holiday she claims she is always accomodating us and our requests so we should give her this one. She's a pagan, doesn't even celebrate Christmas, so why is she making such a fuss over this holiday? And how do I convince her to let us have the girl? (my husband is stubborn and refuses to give up any of his days with her since we live more than 400 miles away and hardly see her anyway)

  • What is the equation for gasoline combustion?

Does anyone know the chemical formula for gasoline, regular.. and how it differs when it is "oxidized for less smog". In the burning of gasoline what is it that the excess oxygen would bind to in order to reduce carbon monoxide in the exhaust? This isn't for school, its just something I was considering when I filled up my tank today.

  • Children and basic math issues?

Does anyone have any thoughts on how to teach a bored 8 year old basic math? He has a lot of trouble with addition with 6s and up. We can't seem to get him to remember how to do the problems or remember the answers. Learning blocks haven't helped and flash cards are worthless with him. He gets a concept one day and forgets it the next. We got him one of those pop-up "calculators" that has the equations 1+1 through 9+9 on it, he just likes pushing the buttons. He loves YuGiOh cards (can't do the math for it) but any ideas using them would be great.

  • Child anger getting out of hand?

My 8 year old is a little behind his peers emotionally. He's actually in a grade below his age group due to this. He always hates losing at games I and try to make sure he understands that everyone loses at some point, and usually everyone wins. He's finally stopped quitting when he starts losing but he gets VERY mad. He starts accusing his opponent of cheating. He also gets very upset when people aren't willing to play games/watch movies/play activities of his choosing right away. I can understand some frustration but he seems to be getting angrier faster and holding it longer. I don't want him to turn into a pissed off teen. Anyone have any ideas on how to get him to calm down? He doesn't lash out or scream or anything, he just gets MAD. Hides in his room and avoids people for a long time.

  • Dealing with feline aggression.?

As a vet tech I should have some clue as to how to deal with this, but in four years I have never seen it at work. We got my cat as a kitten from the humane society. He was feisty and my husband wanted a cat with attitude. Well, he got more than he bargained for. Last spring we had to get him declawed (I despise the whole procedure) because he was randomly attacking people and leaving some nasty marks. Now, he is biting people for no reason. He bit both my kids, out of the blue, one got it twice on different occasions, the other was yesterday and left a distinct bite mark with deep scratches on his back. This cat freaks out at vet clinics, can't stand people who smell like dogs, and doesn't like to be held still for any length of time. He's very affectionate with me, follows me around the house, sits in the kitchen while I cook, and likes to be in the room with us during story time for the kids. My husband is if the opinion that if this was a dog there would be no hesitation, he would be euthanized. He's right. But we've put so much effort into taking care of this cat, he's had to have x-rays and ultrasounds, and meds for a diaphragm problem. Giving up on him now feels wrong. My vet suggest prozac but she said it may take up to a month to get results. I don't think my husband will give me a month to work this out.

    Anyone with ideas?

-- squirting with water doesn't work -- he KNOWS he's doing something wrong cause after he bites he runs and hides under a bed

  • partial dentures vs. bridges?

I have some old root canals that are causing trouble with surrounding teeth and may need to have some upper and some lower teeth removed. Right now I have an estimated cost of $3600 for one bridge and that's using my insurance. I have not discussed dentures with my dentist yet. What are the pros and cons of partial dentures and bridges?

  • Average ranges are significantly different...why?

In a chem class we calculated the ranges of two values given by the instructor. The range of value one was determined to be 25.0-25.4. The range of the second value was 25.55-25.65.

The question asked was: The average values are significantly different from each other, explain the reasoning using the range.
