What is a good biography of Queen Elizabeth I?
I would like one that is historically accurate and interesting to read, NOT a scholarly tome or a fictionalized romance!

9 AnswersBooks & Authors1 decade agoA dog named Shoestring?
Has anybody read a book with a dog named Shoestring in it.? If so, could you give me the title and/or author. I think it was a kids' book published, probably in the 1940's.

1 AnswerBooks & Authors1 decade agoWhere's Seeker?
The person who eventually used the ID Seeker on Yahoo Answers! asked the most interesting and provocative questions, always gave sensitive and thoughtful answers, commented generously on answers to his and others' questions, and gave considerable attention to improving the Yahoo Answers! process. But he hasn't appeared, at least under the name Seeker, for some ten months. Yahoo Answers! desperately needs courteous and dedication respondents like him.
Where is he? Is there anything we can do to let him know he is missed? Is there a way to bring him back?
1 AnswerYahoo Answers1 decade agoHow can Mr. Bush be prevented from starting another preemptive war--on Iran?
12 AnswersGovernment1 decade agoWhat should Congress do to investigate the Cheney/Bush administration and reestablish its constitutional role?
• "For all the reasons Nixon was nearly impeached, George W. Bush could be impeached too. He has openly engaged in illegal, unconstitutional, warrantless spying, and -- while Congress has not yet used subpoenas -- Bush has obstructed its investigations, refused to comply with Freedom of Information Act requests, and broken a variety of laws in the course of exacting retribution against whistleblowers, producing false reports, and establishing a regime of secrecy of a sort that Nixon could only dream about". -- David Swanson, co-founder of the AfterDowningStreet.org coalition, The Black Commentator, 10/26/06
• "Bush's abuses of presidential power are the most extensive in American history. He has launched an aggressive war ("war of choice," in today's euphemism) on false grounds. He has presided over a system of torture and sought to legitimize it by specious definitions of the word. He has asserted a wholesale right to lock up American citizens and others indefinitely without any legal showing or the right to see a lawyer or anyone else. He has kidnapped people in foreign countries and sent them to other countries, where they were tortured." --Jonathan Schell, The Nation via Common Dreams, December 22, 2005
6 AnswersGovernment1 decade agoDoes anyone else have trouble with a cell phone cutting out about every eight seconds?
It's frustrating. For example, when somebody else is giving me a telephone number over my cell phone, one of the numbers will always be cut out. Same with everything else. You can usually tell what the other person is saying even though every eighth second or so is missing, but it sounds strange.
It's a Spr*nt phone. I have taken it in for service several times to no avail. The snippy clerks insist that it has been repaired, but nothing changes.
Also, one of their technicians said I should keep it set on Roam; another said just the opposite and changed it to Automatic.
Technology is wonderful, but only when technology companies know what they're doing and care about providing good service to their customers.
Oh well, the contract is for only one year.
1 AnswerCell Phones & Plans1 decade agoI wonder. In junior or senior high school, were you ever taught to be a good critical reader of the news?
Did you learn to analyze news media and books of informational prose? Did you read and write about current issues and ideas? If so, in what class? By which teachers? In what ways?
I think English is a required subject through grade 12 in most public schools so that we will have an educated citizenry, capable of analyzing issues and ideas and expressing themselves articulately. But I'm not sure whether English classes are achieving that purpose. I wonder.
3 AnswersPrimary & Secondary Education1 decade agoHigh school grads (+), when you think of English (the school subject) what comes to your mind?
Teachers? Topics? Texts? You name it. What comes to your mind when you think of high-school English? I'd be glad to read your stories and hear details about your memories.
And, if you don't mind, give me some indication of how long ago we're talking about.

3 AnswersYahoo Answers1 decade agoHow can we get this piece of literature, "How to Win the War in Al-Anbar," to those that need to see it?
I'm talking about the PowerPoint presentation of Capt. Travis Patriquin. It's one of the best things I've read on the Iraq situation.

You may want to read Marta Raddatz's story for the story has the saddest ending. But Capt. Patriquin's PowerPoint presentation is the story I'm talking about. How can we make sure it is read, and re-read, by those in authority.

Would you accept this list? Do you see serious omissions? Do you disagree with any of the ten listed? If you had to choose ten, how might your list differ from this one?

9 AnswersBooks & Authors1 decade agoI'm curious. How does a closed question get so many answers? And why?
About three weeks ago I responded to a question. It was a simple question, sort of interesting to me. But I responded primarily because it had received zero responses. After I entered my answer, I discovered that the Question, in fact, had been closed. So I thought that would be the end of it.
About a week ago I happened to check back and--lo, and behold--there were 67 answers! Most of them thoughtful and interesting. That figure, as of this posting, is up to 76.
How does a 2-month-old question keep getting responses? And why, I wonder. Esp. one that had received not a single response in the first month or so after being posted?
Just curious. In my experience usually questions get few, if any, responses, after the first few hours of being posted.
Here's the Q: How many pages should a book of poetry have?
