Like cats, own several. I write, create soft sculpture stuffed animals for sale, draw a cartoon strip (putting it into book format soon), and work full time at a day job. I'm older than 25, younger than 50. Not married but in a committed relationship. No kids. And I own a vehicle. Ta da! And the Avatar is who I imagine myself to be (gender may not be accurate, I'm having fun with the avatar program right now. Just found out they have dragons in there too!)

  • Is there human DNA in fecal matter?

Just curious--wondering about copralites found in caves in Central and South America from ancient Aztec times. I know they examined them for what foods were eaten, but was curious about whether or not they could use them for DNA research as well.

  • Anyone use prescription Royal Canin canned catfood?

There's been a new recall on PRESCRIPTION canned only, due to wheat gluten poisoned from China. This is the recent recall, posted 4/12/10 not the one from two years ago.

It's not Royal Canin's fault, the Mars manufacturer that produced it in Canada to avoid recalls in US products (Canada was supposed to be safe). This only affects the prescription food Medi-Cal Feline Dissolution Formula which is ONLY available through vets. At least 16 pets have died. The item is in a full recall.

  • Why do people keep suggesting Pepto Bismol for dogs?

The company changed the ingredients and it's no longer safe to give to canines, the new ingredient is different enough to be dangerous to dogs and is toxic to cats and ferrets (it's an aspirin derivitive).

Yes, it USED to be ok until recently, but it no longer is safe to give. Please do NOT keep recommending it, it can make a dog's problems much worse. The chewable tablets may be ok, you have to check the ingredients on the box to be certain. Online warnings exist, but there's still old info out there, check the dates on the websites.

  • 6 Month old Pit Puppy, 14 Year old Yorkie?

I know pit bulls can be sweet, but today at the print shop I was talking to the owner who was worried about his Yorkie. A 6 month old pit bull puppy had been playing with his older dog a week ago and the puppy got the older dog onto it's back and basically ripped the neck, chest, underarm, belly and side open on the Yorkie to the tune of 54 stitches, some of which were still infected.

This was a 6 month old pup. Not an adult dog.

So many people do blanket statements one way or another on these dogs (for or against) but it still comes down to the fact the breed is bred to bite and hurt animals -- bulls originally, other animals now.

The two owners separated the dogs asap, it wasn't done as an attack, the puppy was not owned by someone who wanted to fight the dog or was encouraging aggression to have a 'protector'. I think this comes across more as a cautuionary tale for people with smaller dogs, cats, young children and babies to watch the actions of pit bulls in general.

Could this have been a kid with this puppy who could have gotten hurt? Very likely.

  • So you don't think indoor cats need vaccinations?

I knew distemper was hard to get rid of in an environment, but what I heard at the vets today really is startling.

I was there to get my indoor cat her booster, she was due for her distemper shot. My vet was talking about a cat they just saw, an indoor one, never vaccinated, never outside, about six years old and in good health. The owners had a party and two days after that their cat was sick enough she was brought in to the vets--diagnosis was feline distemper. The virus is so long lived that one of the guests had brought it in on their clothes and the cat had contracted it. From time of contact to time of death, it was a mere 10 days. There was nothing that could save the cat.

Do indoor cats need basic vaccinations? Yes, they need to have that Three-in-one shot that protects against this even if they don't go outside. It must have been heartbreaking for the owners, they loved the cat.

  • Looking for a title --SF story about meteorite in Argentina that was actually a planet terraforming 'egg'?

I was dumpster diving three years ago at the Mall looking for boxes, ran across two full boxes of 'destroyed books' - meaning the covers were torn off and the Barnes & Noble had discarded them. Got some good reads out of it (yeay!) but one in particular that I wanted to read again. Everyone I passed the book to loved it. However the cover and all pages up to the first page of the writing was gone. I don't know what the name was or the author--and the book is somewhere with a cousin now.

Plot--millionaire wantes the world's largest meteorite, which has been found at the tip of Argentina. He has to load up a special boat to carry it, which is disguised as a tramp freighter, to get past the Argentinian government. There's a rogue submarine commander bent on destroying him for 'looting' and three teams of people trying to dig this meteor out, which has hit the mountainside back before life appeared on this planet.

It ends in a south pole shootout, with the ship being sunk and the sub destroyed, and the meteor dropped to the bottom of the ocean, and the last page lets us know it was a 'seed' sent out to terraform planets with water that have not had life develop on it. It starts the process, not knowing that life has evolved already--setting roots into the earth's core and starting to destabalize the entire surface of the world.

Does anyone know what the title or author is on this? I really want to read it again, it was a great read. Even said at one point that the Millionaire hired Spielberg's Light & Magic people to disguise the brand new ship to look ancient. And that the meteor was to be taken to a new museum in Ohio built especially for it.

  • Ok, a stupid dog-related question?

Meanint the question may be dumb, not the dog.

I'm more a cat person (haven't had a dog since I was 12). Two times now, recently, when visiting people, their dog has brought out their favorite toy and come over by me, NOT to give me the toy, but just to hold onto it while I look at it.

They aren't sharing the toy, just standing there looking really happy. One was a German shepherd with a football crammed into his mouth, and the other one, tonight, was a yorki with a yellow fake banana held as tight at he could in his jaws.

I make appreciative noises at the dog which seemed to be all they wanted. What's with showing me their favorite toy? Is this a displacement behavior so they could get approval from a stranger? Neither wanted me to touch the toy or throw it for them.

  • My VCR & the upcoming HDTV change?

I guess this is a two part question. I have an older tv, we got the converter box (hasn't been hooked up yet) and I've watched the PBS info show on the upcoming change. My questions are this---

    1. Since one signal is coming in via the converter box, does this mean that I can only record the station I will be watching to a video tape? That I can't record say channel 6 while I'm watching channel 4?

    2. And the signal---will the VCR be able to record the new HD signal to a video tape after Feb. of 2009 or will my VCR NOT understand the signal and only give me gibberish? (My VCR is 4 years old).

These questions were never covered on the show and nobody has been able to give me a solid answer.

  • The movie American Beauty?

In the end, was it the Marine that killed the father, or the wife?

The Marine was the one covered in blood, but his son's first words were "My mother..."

And the wife was psyching herself up all the drive back to 'not be a victim.'

We only saw the gun, was that the gun the wife had learned to shoot with? Or one that the Marine had on the wall?

  • State Quarter miscast?

I've got a state quarter with what looks like a 'new front and back only the horse and rider look sanded off. No detail lines are on the figures, It's the Wyoming state quarter and the bucking horse and rider are only there as raised outlines. Do I have a misprint on the coin or is this something from wear and tear? The rest of the surfaces look fine.

  • Ferals--Domestication or Stockholm Syndrome?

LOL I was thinking on this the other day. When you take in a feral and get it used to you as a way of taming them down, doesn't it seem awful close to what has been termed the Stockholm Syndrome (where the captives start to identify with their captors)?

Either way, the end result is the same--calm cats who are used to people (or certain people). It just seems like there's a certain amount of crossover in this. Sorta.
