  • Gas boiler pressure rises when heat is off?

I have an old American Standard gas boiler in the laundry room with an old style expansion tank on the wall. I turned my heat off about a month ago. When I turned off the heat, the temp on the boiler was 100 degrees and the pressure was 14psi. I checked this morning and temp was at 115 degrees and the pressure was 16psi. I never turned the gas flowing to the burner off in all the years I've lived here but the heat is off. Any reason why the temp has gone up? I know the temp raises the pressure so I wanted to know if 16psi is a good level for a unit that is off. Thank you.

  • What's the scientific reason it's so cold out?

I'm trying to do some research to find out why it's been so cold in the east coast this winter and right now. I live outside of Baltimore and it's surreal how cold it's been. Yet another cold front will be here by mid-week. I've heard the jet stream changing and just changes and weather patterns. Even if you just post a relevant link, it would help. I'm trying to decide if I want to stay here but if this is the new normal, I'm just going to move south. Thanks.

  • What should the pressure be on my gas boiler?

I have an old gas boiler from the 50's or maybe the 60's. I'm trying to find out what the pressure and temp should be at 65 degrees. It is typically around 110-120 degrees and pressure is around 14psi when the boiler is not running. It goes up to 17 or 18 psi and around 140-150 degrees after running. Does this sound right? Also, would the pressure/temperature increase if I turned up the heat in the house and would it go down if I turned the temperature down? Finally, the heat has not been on for a week because it's been warm but it will be cold tonight. There is a metal expansion tank attached to the boiler and hung from the ceiling. When I knocked on the bottom of it, it sounded hollow or empty. Is this good or bad? Sorry if these questions sound stupid but this is the first house I've had with a gas boiler, the other house had a furnace. Thank you.

  • Good sealant for a wet surface?

I have a copper pipe running to my washing machine with a slight leak where the sodder was put. It drips a drop or 2 per minute. I tried the plumbing tape but the pipe is bracketed into a piece of wood running along the wall. I tried to remove the bracket but the screws are rusted in place (probably from the water). The entire pipes will be replaced in the next couple of months but is there a type of spray sealant or glue I could use for the short term? I tried Goop but it didn't work with the drip and flexseal says not to spray in an indoor area and the laundry room is indoors and not well ventilated. Any help or suggestions is appreciated. Thanks so much.

  • Was Jack the Ripper a prostitute?

I've studied Jack the Ripper for a few years and have come to the conclusion that Jack the Ripper was a prostitute based on a few things. All but one of the murders occurred in open places. This would mean the victim would likely know and trust the killer. The killer would have been able to begin attacking the victim with an element of surprise easier as the victim would have their guard down. Think about it, would you fear someone you know more or a complete stranger? The killer would need to be able to walk around without being noticed. Every serial killer in history the lived near or worked near where their murders took place and had a great knowledge of the geographic area. This would rule out the famous out of towners as suspects. A prostitute with blood on her in those days could have easily been mistaken for a midwife. There have been 30 recorded murders in the past 100 years where prostitutes were butchered in this manner. In 29 of the 30 cases, the murderer was a woman. Saliva DNA taken from a stamp from a letter believe to be a real Ripper letter was female DNA. In 2 instances, witnesses saw a woman leaving the crime scene shortly after the murder but no witnesses ever reported men leaving the scene. There has NEVER been any proof at all the murders were committed by a man. Any thoughts on whether Jack the Ripper could have been a woman?

  • Stone house falling apart?

I have a 90 year old house made of stone. The stone appears to have been covered with a layer of concrete or cement and painted over. A large amount of the concrete or cement fell off and now the stone is exposed. It appears to be chipping away as well. My biggest concern this is occurring at the bottom of the house, maybe a foot off the ground. We have had a brutal winter so I think this caused it. My concern is will the house collapse? Should I have a contractor replace the concrete/cement or are there other problems to check for? Thanks.

  • Car loan denied after I signed loan paperwork?

I can't figure this out at all. I bought a used car and completed all the financing paperwork. I added insurance, tags, and title to the car. The finance company verified my information and called my boss to verify income. I actually got set up with them to make payments online. 3 weeks later now I'm told the loan is denied. My credit is average, my job puts me at middle class income, and I put down 20% as down payment. Plus I gave in a trade in. Now if I have to return car I will have no way to get to work because the dealer sold my trade in. He said he can't figure it out because he got an actual approval number and this has not happened to him. It's a used car and he does not want the car back he just wants it sold and I love the car. Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas what I can do?

  • Gas boiler problem in old house?

I rent an old house. The drafts of cold air make the boiler work extra. It's 68 degrees and freezing. My landlord just says turn the boiler up to 70 or 72. When I do the pressure rises and so does the water temp and the pipes make all kinds of noise. I'm concerned about the boiler breaking or the pipes exploding from pressure. At 72 degrees psi goes to 20 and temp to 170-180. Any advice. Should I be concerned. Thank you.

  • Do cats eat less in the winter?

I always thought animals would eat less when it's hot but every winter it seems like my cat goes for a week or 2 eating less food than normal. He's eating about 20-30% less than he usually does. Does this ever happen to your cat? He eats only wet food so I'm concerned about him not getting enough water. I put out an extra water bowl. Any other advice or ideas? Thanks.

  • Should you turn heat up or down in a cold snap?

We are getting ready for another cold front to arrive. I can never figure out what is easier on the gas boiler, to turn it down during a cold front so it runs less or leave it at one temperature so it stays steady. Its a very small house about the size of a large one bedroom apartment which is heated by a gas boiler forcing hot water. The house temp right now is 68 degrees. I've lived in the south most of my advice so any advice on what is best for the boiler would be helpful. Thank you.

  • Can my cat stay in the car while I'm at work?

I'm having remodeling done to my house tomorrow. My concern is the noise will really scare my cat. I'm wondering if it will be okay to leave my cat in the car while I'm at work from 9 to 5. I don't have another place to leave him. The temps will be 35 in morning and a high of 55 and sunny so the weather should be okay. I've tried pet hotels but they are all closed today. My vet does not do boarding and I can't take off work because I took off 2 days last week for a family funeral. Any suggestions?

  • Gas boiler expansion tank question?

I have an older 1950's model American Standard gas boiler. Going to the expansion tank is a thin gauge copper pipe divided into 3 sections with valves between each section. When the boiler is running the entire copper pipe leading to the expansion tank gets very hot. After the boiler stops about 10 minutes later the 2 sections of copper pipe closest to the expansion tank get cool. The section of copper pipe furthest away from the expansion tank which runs directly into the boiler pipes stays very hot. Is this normal? Also, if I drop the temperature in the house from 68 to 63 will the pressure needed to run the boiler drop? At 68 degree the cold pressure is around 14, hot around 17-18. Thank you!

  • What is the ideal pressure for a gas boiler?

I have a very old American Standard gas boiler in my house. I'm trying to figure out what the ideal water pressure should be for both cold and hot. When cold it is around 14 pressure with a temp of 125. When hot it goes to around 18 or so with a temp of 170. There is a red hand on the pressure side which is constantly at 17 or 18. Any idea what that is for or what it does? Thank you.

  • I'm concerned about my pipes freezing?

I'm very concerned about the pipes in the house I rent freezing. There is a water pipe that runs in the attic. There is literally no insulation in the attic at all. Tonight where I live it will be very cold like 18 degrees plus wind chill. The next 2 nights about the same or colder. The house has stood for 50 years so I know its been cold before. Plus the main water supply runs into the house from the outside (city water). Wouldn't that freeze first? Is there anything I can do now except pray and cross my fingers? Its 68 degrees in the house and I have a space heater running too. I have the cabinets open and closets open to help the pipes on the main floor. My concern is the house is 1 level no basement and will flood it the pipe freezes. Thanks.

  • Good wifi security camera for home?

Can anyone recommend a good security camera to watch my home on my phone while I'm at work? I'm considering a Belkin system. Trying to spend $150 or less. My phone is a Droid X2. The purpose of the camera is just to watch the animals and kids indoors while I'm away. I don't need a security system because I have one. I just need something to watch what's going on indoors from time to time. Thanks.

  • Are the Cardinals a legit wild card contender?

Just saw the highlights from the Cardinals beat down of the Colts. I think they are a legit wild card team. They will lose at Seattle but should win 2 or 3 of their other games giving them 9 or 10 wins. Any chance they make the playoffs?

  • Sold a car that does not run?

I sold a Toyota Camry to my neighbor that does not run. He also has a Camry that is the same year and is going to use it for parts. I signed over the title and made up a bill of sale for $1.00. On the bill of sale I put the car does not run and is only for use of spare parts. He wants to take off the parts and junk it. My question is does he have to switch the title to his name to have it towed to the junkyard when he is done taking off the parts or can he just show them the bill of sale. I don't even think the car has an engine it right now so getting it to a place to be inspected is out of the question. Thanks,
