  • How do I keep the correct date format when I import data from a spreadsheet?

    Hi

I have exported some data in CSV format into a spreadsheet, which I am using as a merge document. One of the fields is the date (actually the date of birth of the recipients of the mail merge). In the spreadsheet the date format is correct (ie, the English way to write a date: 18 August 2011) This is as I wish it to appear in the mail merged letter. However, once I link the spreadsheet to my letter, the date format changes to 08-18-11. How do I format the spreadsheet to ensure the data is exported into my letter exactly as it appears in the spreadsheet? Thanks.

  • Can You Help With Wine Matching?

We are hosting a New Year's Eve dinner party for eight guests, two of whom are vegetarian. I have developed the following menu:

    French Onion Soup

Tian of Smoked Salmon and Avocado

Sauteed Field Mushrooms and Brie En Croute - with Port and Redcurrant Jus

    Chocolate Torte and/or Traditional Trifle

Stilton and Home Made Walnut Bread with Grapes

I am confident with the food, but less so with the wines, but my plan is as follows:

Champagne (Vintage Pol Roger) with the Canapes and keep the Champagne flowing through the soup and smoked salmon

Pinot Grigio with the Mushrooms and Brie En Croute - I am less happy with this, I think it is a safe, but dull, choice. Any better suggestions?

Muscat de Beaumes de Venice with the Torte

Finally I have a good bottle of Dows for the Stilton.

What do our resident wine experts think of the wine pairing? I am genuinly happy to take advice and recommendations. Thank you.

  • Your and you're / were, we're and where / there, their and they're?

I am a regular participant in an online discussion forum which links British and American Conservatives. I have noticed that many American people don't seem to know the difference between their and there, where and were, and especially your and you're. I would estimate that over 70% get it wrong every time. Is grammar, spelling and syntax now considered unimportant in modern teaching, or is this a sad reflection of how phonetic language is taking over our culture. The problem exists in the UK too, but not on the same scale. I notice that many US graduates make the same mistakes, even those from the best East Coast establishments with first class degrees.

  • How can I find a valuation for the English landscape /pastel artist David Blackburn?

I own two early drawings by the renowned pastel artist, Dr David Blackburn, which I now might need to sell to finance a business venture. They were gifts to my parents who left them to me. How can I ascertain their value? I don't wish to go through the artist personally or his London gallery in case it causes offence.

  • Sunday Lunch in Dublin City Centre?

Where is the best place go for a nice Sunday Lunch in Central Dublin? Please - I don't want McDonalds, KFC or Pizza Hut ! I am hoping for good restaurants where food is served at your table on china plates by properly trained waiting staff. I don't want places where you queue up at a counter and get your food in a cardboard box ! Any serious suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Adobe pdf Reader has stopped working?

My Adobe pdf reader has stopped working. Where I have pdf files saved, the "adobe" icon has vanished. And when I try to open existing files or new pdf attachments it attempts to open them using Word and I get a "file conversion" screen.

I have tried all the obvious. I have un-installed all the Adobe software and reinstalled and I have checked for newer versions - nothing has worked.

    I am using Vista.

Any suggestions please (in simple English as I am technophobic!)

  • What would happen if a Presidential Candidate died or was assasinated between the convention and the election?

I am a political activist in the UK and a close follower of American politics. This afternoon someone asked me the above question, and I genuinely did not know the answer.

Would the VP candidate automatically take over ? Or would there have to be an emergency convention to nominate a replacement ? What if it happened a few days before the election? Would the main opposition candidate automatically win or would the election be postponed so another candidate could be selected?

I would appreciate serious cross referenced answers please. Thank you.

  • Elections WON or LOST by one vote?

I have read somewhere that throughout history a number of key elections have been decided by one vote, and that the course of history would have been dramatically changed had just one person voted differently.

I think the most famous example was Adolf Hitler being elected to lead Germany's National Socialist Party by a one vote majority (altough I am not sure if this is true).

Can anyone provide me with decent examples (with sources noted where possible) where ONE vote has made a difference in an election.

    Thank you.

  • URGENT HELP: words needed for a Dr Seuss poem please?

    Hi

I urgently need some help from yahoo users please.

At very short notice I have been asked to deliver a reading at the funeral of the young son of a family friend tomorrow (Friday). The person who was scheduled to deliver the reading is too emotional and cannot face doing it - so they have asked me to stand in.

The reading is part of a poem by Dr Seuss called "Thinker Upper". It beings

"a thing my sister likes to do some evenings after supper, is sit upstairs in her small room and use her Thinker Upper."

The family have the reading written out for me to read, but I really want to pactice a few times before the gathering. I was sure I had a copy in a box of books I kept from childhood, but cannot find it. Nor can I find the words on the web.

Does anynone have the words for me please ? Or perhaps you have a link to a Dr Seuss site which contains the poem. Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you.
