  • Do I deduct healthcare expenses the year financed or the year paid?

I've financed a lot of dental and orthodontic work. I used Care Credit for the dental, and Chase Health Advance for the orthodontic. I started making payments on them last year.

On my taxes, do I deduct it all in last year's taxes because the dentist and orthodontist got their money already, or do I deduct only the amount that I've paid to the finance companies already?

Thanks in advance for informed answers.

  • Is the Criss Angel playing card actually still in the door at the Luxor?

Just watched a season 4 episode of Mindfreak, Close Up (not to be confused with season 1 episode Up Close). He does a trick at the end where he throws a pack of cards at one of the doors in the Luxor and the one that he and the girl signed gets embedded in the door. He says to come and see it, and that it'll be there for years to come.

Anyone been to the Luxor lately and can say that it's actually there?

  • Star Trek Voyager: Insignia on B'Elanna Torres's coat?

This has been bugging me for ages! It took browsing episode by episode to find a picture, and I have found no explanation yet. Anyone know the origin of the insignia on the coat in this picture?

  • How do I find recycling centers that give you CRV per item?

It seems easy enough to find a place to get recyclable bottles and cans weighed. However, I want to get my full CRV back, and it seems the only way to do that is to count the pieces out per item. I remember there used to be machines outside of my local grocery store where you put the cans into a slot, but they're gone.

Is there a website that lists the places to get your CRV back? I'm located in the San Gabriel Valley of southern California.

  • Transfer classes from university to community college?

I took a year's worth of classes at a 4-year university before high school. My high school transcripts aren't that great, I would not be able to apply straight off to a 4-year university without transferring in from a community college.

I'm now in my second semester in community college.

Can I transfer my university coursework to the community college toward completion of my AA? ...toward transferring to a 4-year university?

Should I complete the rest of the transfer coursework and apply to a third school later on, combining coursework from both schools to meet transfer requirements? (But then skipping the AA.)

I would rather not re-take classes... but since I was 13 when I took them, I have some Cs at the university that would bring my cumulative GPA down. What's your advice?

  • Brother can't get license till age 19.5, can he get permit at 19? (California)?

My brother, silly boy that he is, decided that his friend was too drunk to drive and he decided to drive home even though he didn't have a permit or license. He got pulled over for a headlight problem, and now because of being caught driving without a license, he was told he can't drive until he's 19.5, which will be in January.

Not driving is now becoming a hurdle for him to find a job, now that he's out of high school. Can he take the written and get his permit now, so he's ready to take the driving test in January asap? If he has a permit, can he legally drive with a licensed adult in the car, or does "no license until you're 19.5" mean "no driving until you're 19.5"?

We're in Los Angeles county, California.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Looking for a WW2 poem I read in high school...?

I'm looking for this poem that I read in high school for use in a college class, but I can't find it! It was in an anthology book in my high school's library, which is of course now not anywhere near me!

The poem is approximately 20-30 lines long, and it talks about how old men talk and tell the children about war, and when the second world war starts, they all enlist. It basically paints the older generation as talking up the war, and the children as ignoring the lessons of the first war... The last line ends in "and they went" or something like that.

    Any leads?

  • English to Spanish translation of "Empower" (the people to...)?

I've tried using an English/Spanish dictionary, and the word I got that I couldn't exclude on my own knowledge was "facultar." Got my composition back, and it was wrong of course. I've tried using the thesaurus for different English words to try to translate, but nothing sounds right...

The context is "no fue para ________ a la gente" as in "the purpose was not to empower the people."

    Any help appreciated. =)

  • What to fund next?

My husband and I are 22 and 23. We're putting $~1,500 per month into debt payment and savings. In August, we'll be out of debt and by January we'll have funded a 3-month emergency fund. (One month of expenses in savings in the same bank we do checking in, two months in an online bank for higher interest.)

After that, I'd like to start a second account at the same online bank as a new car fund. I figure paying off our financed car early and then financing the next one isn't as good as continuing payments and paying cash for the next one. Any comments on that logic?

My husband takes a new job once a year or so and I don't think he'll be at his current job long enough to qualify for their 401(k). What's our next best bet for long term savings that can be used for retirement or for a house? (Retirement in 30-40 years, house in 5-10?) We live in Southern California so we'll need a big chunk of change as a down payment to ever buy a house.

  • How to gain new dog's respect?

My sister and her husband were given a very large dog (the were told it's a great dane, but my sister says she's not sure) by one of his friends who had to move somewhere they couldn't have her. The friend had her as an outdoor dog, and told them that he could leave the doors open and she wouldn't come in.

Now at my sister's house, she never leaves her dog house and looks at my sister and her husband as weird strangers, understandably. She barks at strangers in the alley, and once ate from my sister's hand with some coaxing, but she's still depressed. What can they do to help her be comfortable with her new home?

  • Round trip snailmail to Mexico - security?

I've been reading about concerns over sending packages to Mexico.

What I want to do is send a medium sized manilla envelope with a letter, a few dozen sheets of paper (genealogy forms for my relatives to take a look at and fill in the blanks for), a return envelope, and return postage in the way of one of those $2 return postage vouchers. It'll be going to Guadalajara.

Should I be concerned about my mail not getting there or not coming back? Frankly, I'm more concerned about it not coming back once the information is filled in. If it doesn't get there, I can always send it again.

Any tips? Past experience with snail mail back and forth to Mexico?

  • What size bed should we buy?

My husband and I are looking into buying a new bed.

He's about 6'1" and I'm 5'9". He sleeps on his stomach or side, I sleep on my side. We both typically sleep with our arms up (his around his pillow, mine usually over my face), so I don't know how much width to allow. I'm normally pretty comfortable in narrow spaces (like sleeping on couches) but I think he needs more elbow room because of his pillow hugging.

At 73 inches, he should be just about short enough for our full sized bed (75 inches, according to what I've seen) but he always ends up with his feet hanging off the foot of the bed. That can't be healthy, can it?

I think that we should probably get a king sized bed. Which is the "normal" king size, Cal or eastern? Which is easier to get sheets and stuff for?

  • How does transfer of property from parent to child affect us- taxes, credit, etc?

My mom's considering transferring her property to me. I'm 23, married 1.5 years, with sub-prime credit (nothing bad on my report, I just haven't had credit very long). My husband has non-existent credit.

There are two fully paid off properties, total value of about $800k-1m. My parents live in one, and rent the duplex to my two sisters.

Are there different ways to do this? Sale vs gift, etc? What taxes would have to be paid?

Would it affect our credit scores?

I'm sure it'll affect financial assistance for us, but work pays my husband's college tuition anyway.

I would imagine that it'll prevent future first-time buyer incentives for us. Is that a big deal? What are other affects on our potential future home purchase?

I don't want to discourage my parents from doing it, because they haven't written a will (I'm trying to get them to) and this will prevent some in-fighting if my husband and I split the assets when they're gone. I just want to get the facts first and do it right.

  • I feel so lost! Recipe ideas for picky eater?

I'm like an advanced beginner when it comes to cooking. I need ideas that are not too complicated, with prep time up to an hour (not counting baking time if applicable).

    The facts:

My husband and I are both trying to lose weight.

I'm lactose intolerant, and I dislike most veggies.

I like salads, but not with onions/tomato.

My stomach gets upset when I eat some non-lactose things. I think I may be sensitive to tomatoes. (No meatloaf, tomato-based pasta sauce, cheese-less pizzas, bbq sauce...)

I hate to punish my husband for my weak stomach, so suggestions of things I can easily modify would be great- a non-tomato, non-milk, non-veggie alternative for me and one with all of the above for him without cooking two separate meals?

I can only take so much chicken salad!

I'm getting very discouraged about this cooking at home thing.

Recipes not necessary but welcome, mostly just need dish ideas. Need to pack his lunch for work, I eat lunch at home, and cook dinner for two.

  • Tempur-Pedic vs Sleep Number?

Cost is not a major issue. Based on quality, which would you recommend?

My husband and I are in our 20s. He tosses and turns, generally ending up on his stomach. I sleep on my side, but typically switch sides a couple of times due to shoulder pain. I also have chronic lower back pain.

I've been leaning toward a Sleep Number bed, and I've checked them out at the store. Commercials for the Tempur-Pedic bed look good too, but I've never seen/felt one. Any pros and cons?

  • What should I expect at the Family History Center?

There are several film numbers from the IGI that I would like to look up. Should I ask someone to go to the FHL in Salt Lake City and print them for me, or should I order the film to be sent to the FHC not far from here? What's the process for odering film? Do all the FHCs have film printing capabilities, and how much does it normally cost? (I wasn't able to find that information online.)

What information should I take with me to generate research leads? I have all of my genealogy stuff on my laptop, and I only occassionally print out charts. Should I take the laptop, or should I just print out information about people I'm actively researching?

Any advice on what I should do while I'm there? I'm planning to make a trip in the next week or two.

  • Is a community college elementary piano course appropriate for a 15-year-old?

I'm planning to take a piano class, and I want to invite my sister-in-law to take it with me. I've done music before (music theory and saxophone), and she's done voice work in church. She's homeschooled, so she can't take a school class. Do you think that a community college class would be an appropriate class for her, or should I look for other options (such as a city rec department or private business)?
