She said it was a white sugar ball with a nut inside of it. She said it was about the size of a jawbreaker. It had crystalized sugar on the outside. Any ideas what this is?

I had the thermostat changed by 3 different mechanics in the past 1 and half - the heat worked until a couple weeks ago. Now it blows out cold air. The car temp gauge sometimes reads hot but does not overheat - I can turn the car off and later the gauge reads normal - my brother said have the radiator flushed - what do you think?
