  • What are some practical things that children know today that adults didn't know hundreds of years ago?

I'm talking about things like germs, magnifying glasses, how electricity works - what are some things that any middle school child knows that would baffle an adult in the twelfth century?

  • My eye-lid twitches - Why? How do I make it stop?

You can see this in the movie "The Bourne Ultimatum" - the end where Bourne goes into the training center "where it all began" and the old man stays there to "keep him in play" - watch the old man's eyelid - that's what's happening to me. It happened a long time ago when I was a stockbroker and the firm was going to Hell - the stress did it. Now I'm not sure why, or more importantly - how to make it STOP.

  • Changing Money: Which airport - departure or destination?

If I leave one country, and have that country's money - should I change money in that country, or should I land in the next country and change money there?

Does it make a difference? (A friend of mine said it does).

  • The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: old audio version request?

    I need the ISBN number.

I'm looking for the one, about an hour long, it was on cassette when I first found it, about twenty years ago, and when Ford Prefect is introduced they said, "...he will enter our story in SEVENTEEN POINT TWO SECONDS and say 'Hello Arthur'..."

17.2 seconds is the only way I can explain which one it is.

  • Quadratic equations: Give me a WORD problem, then show me the equation...?

I want to know what these things are used for and how to use them. Give me a simple word PROBLEM and the solution.

I asked this before, so let me be absolutely clear this time:

I have two apples, I give one away, therefore I now have one apple: 2-1=1

THAT'S a word problem and the equation.

"A hundred years ago, half the population died in birth and the other half died at sixty. 60+0=60/2= average age of 30." - THAT is ALSO a word problem.

What I'm not looking for is "My favorite application is something called the golden ratio; a special ratio that is used in all sorts of architecture and can be found in nature; the most classic example is the nautilus shell. In order to get the golden ratio, you use a quadratic formula:

    x^2 - x = 1

    x^2 - x - 1 = 0

    x = [(5)^1/2 -1] / 2 = 1.61803399" - that's an example, but it's not a WORD PROBLEM - it doesn't SOLVE anything for me.

No - the teachers aren't telling us this.

No - the teachers don't KNOW why or how they're used.

    YES - I DID ask.

No - they said the only reason we learned them is because they're on the test.

I'm an adult now, and I'd like to know what the Hell is going on here!

  • If electrons are negative, and protons are positive - why do electrons ORBIT? Why don't they just stick?

I thought opposites attracted. If that's true, why are the electrons orbiting the protons, instead of sticking there like they should be - like nails to a magnet.

  • Quadratic Equations: What are they FOR? How do you USE one? What's the practical application?

I'm an adult now, and many of you are too, so you can someone PLEASE show me a quadratic equation, AND the practical applications for them. What word problem is formatted into a quadratic equation? I asked my math teachers and they didn't know!

You know what I'm talking about - those insane X to the power of minus one over Y divided by one over Q equal 17. (I'm just making that up but you know what I mean).

  • TV Show: LOST - what episode is it where they stop putting the number into the computer in the bunker?

I need the season and episode number.

Remember, they find a bunker, there's a computer counting down, and you've got to put in a number sequence every few hours or minutes, and the clock resets. I want to see the episode where they DIDN'T put the code in to reset it.

  • SKYPE: My contacts and I are both online but we can't see or CALL each other!?

I got an e-mail from an International contact saying we ought to talk on Skype. I called them and told them to turn Skype on - they said it WAS on. I heard them call me but it didn't go through. I tried and it didn't go through then either.

Is there some way I can contact Skype directly - like a HUMAN?

I uploaded the latest version, but that was no help either.

  • Airport Customs: What happens to the stuff customs confiscates?

A friend of mine bought me a very large bottle of Grand Marnier. He brought it from the US to South Korea, and they TOOK it!

Is there ANY way I can get it back? What do they DO with it? They said he was over the limit. If I'd been there I woulda said, "Gotcha - go ahead and pull up a glass and we'll get it back down."

I want it back. Where does all this stuff go?

  • "Porn is bad" - WHY? I don't mean images of girls being taken advantage of...?

THAT kind of porn is terrible. But I mean, two people making love as equals - what's wrong with that? I'm not looking for the "nothing's wrong with it" people, I'm looking for the people who have real actual objections, and I want to know what those objections are.

Tell me the argument - I'm in the market to buy, so SELL me.

  • Gaming systems and ROCK BAND: What are the differences in different systems? + Rock Band versions-differences?

TWO parts: I love RockBand, but I don't know what system to get, or what version of the game.

WHY is one system better than another?

WHAT is the DIFFERENCE between systems?

What can I do on one system that I can't do on another?

What is the difference in versions? How many versions are there? Are all the songs from version 1 available on version 2?

I'm an American in South Korea - this is gonna cost me, so I've got to get this right in one shot.

  • Are there any artificial satellites that are in a stable elliptical orbit?

I'm thinking, the Earth, in an elliptical orbit, when it gets closer to the sun, ought to eventually fall into the sun after a few revolutions, but it doesn't. A circular orbit would allow a La Grange point, but an elliptical one? I don't know. Do you?

  • What system should I buy for ROCK BAND, (please read further)?

I want to play Rock Band.

    I've heard there's Rock Band 2 etc.

    I've heard there's different sytems.

    What are the differences?

Are the songs on Rock Band 1 absent from Rock Band 2?

Can I contact the company that makes Rock Band directly? - Does anyone have their e-mail? Or phone number?

I'm importing it to South Korea - it's gonna cost me, so I've gotta get this right.

  • Yahoo! Groups: With high traffic, how can I see responses to MY posts only?

I'm a member of certain Yahoo! Groups with so many posts per day that it's a pain to find responses to the posts that I make. I don't want to see all the posts, nor the Daily Digest - is there a way to get my own responses ONLY e-mailed to me?

  • DVD Regional codes: How do I override them?

I'm an American citizen living in Korea. I bought a Korean laptop and I want to watch some American-made (zone 1) DVDs, but the laptop will only play zone 3. I can change the zone, but only a limited number of times.

I'm not ripping off the entertainment companies, I just want to be able to watch the stuff I paid for.

Any software I can download to watch my stuff?

  • JAPAN: Native English speaker thinking about teaching English in Japan: what's normal and what's not...?

I'm thinking about teaching English in Japan. I need to know what's normal in a contract and what's not.

What expenses can I expect; apartment maintenance fees, key fees (like in South Korea), who expensive are utilities?

I need someone who's DONE it. Someone who can tell me what to expect, and what they didn't expect and found out the hard way.

How do you get health insurance?

How hard is it to get your own housing (or should I just take whatever the school arranges)?

How much money do I need to bring (in Yen)?

WHAT do I need to know?
