11 AnswersPolls & Surveys1 decade agoWhat does a d with a slash through it mean?
My thermochemistry book just started using it without explaining what exactly it means... its a d with a forward slash through it.
For example, I know that q (heat) = U (internal energy) - w (work)
and the book describes the equation as d(with slash)q = d(no slash) U - d(with slash)w
soooo... wtf does it mean?
1 AnswerMathematics1 decade agoHow to deal with a capacitor in parallel with a resistor?
Its a circuit comprised of a 100V battery with a 10^-5F capacitor and 150ohm resistor in series (easy enough to analyze). What happens to the capacitance and/or total resistance if a 100ohm resistor is added in parallel to the capacitor?
Please explain any work, the answer alone will not help me here
Physics1 decade agoBest Physical Chemistry resource?
According to reviews on Amazon, the textbook im using (Physical Chemistry- Second Edition, by Thomas Engel and Philip Reid) is HORRIBLE... which came as absolutely no surprise to me. All the reviewers said they were glad their teacher's were so helpful because the book quite possibly made learning thermodynamics HARDER... but I DONT HAVE A GOOD TEACHER. SHE SUCKS.
know of any good P. chem books that really help? i cannot survive this semester if i have to rely on lectures and this sh!tty text book...
1 AnswerChemistry1 decade agoForce from an infinite sheet question...?
An infinite sheet is charged so that there are +10C/m over the entire sheet. What force does the sheet exert on a +2uC charge placed 3 meters away from the plate?
please explain/show work because i need to actually be able to DO this... i have a hazy idea about how to go about it using Coulombs law (F=K(q1)(q2)/r^2) but im not sure how to adapt it to an infinite sheet because of the +10C/m^2 messing the units up
1 AnswerPhysics1 decade agoLooking to start an indoor garden?
Im just wondering what i should be looking for in terms of lighting... will a higher wattage bulb grow my plants faster? will special "plant light" bulbs work any better? etc.
2 AnswersOther - Home & Garden1 decade agoWhat bug is in my planter box?
They dont move around very much, but if you blow on the dirt you can see TONS of them crawling about. The biggest ones are MAYBE a millimeter in length with very thin, grey bodies... if only for curiosity's sake i'd like to know what they are, but i'd also like to know if they can hurt my plants

1 AnswerVideo & Online Games1 decade agoFor those who oppose gay marriage to "protect the sanctity of marriage"?
Would you outlaw divorce?
If religion is your basis for opposing gay marriage, it should be safe to assume you also subscribe to the other end of the marriage-sanctity stick, that divorce is ALSO a sin.
If your interest truly lies in protecting the sacred union of man and woman, why is there such an overwhelming lack of outrage that divorce is so incredibly prevalent in modern society?
11 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoLife without religion?
I'll preface this question by saying im agnostic with catholic upbringings (went through the whole rebel against christianity/atheist phase) and have come to the opinion that religion (for the most part) is beneficial to society. I understand that we all have different beliefs and i'll be the first to say that i have no better way of proving that my belief is correct than you do of your own beliefs. Still, i believe that most people (with raging ex-catholics/christians-turned-atheist aside) believe in their religion simply because they were raised to believe as their parents would have them believe (which is what THEIR parents had them believe, which is what THEIR parents had them believe, which is what THEIR parents had them believe, etc.)
Image for a minute, if you can, a life in which you grew up without going to church/mosque/temple/mass/insert-place-of-worship-here. A life where you were not told the stories of those who lived thousands of years ago. All you have is what is in the present and your life therein without any influence to believe in a certain -ism.
how significantly do you think this difference would impact you as a human being? would you be any more or less of a good person? What sort of impact would it have on communities? countries? continents? the world? would we really see that big a difference?
i assure you this question is not preloaded with a certain answer in mind, though i have an idea what certain groups of people are likely to say, but who knows, maybe i'll be surprised :P

2 AnswersChemistry1 decade agoHelp using NMR/IR to identify an unknown?
Im at my wits end here... i've been using an NMR simulator (http://www.nmrdb.org/predictor) to try and find the identity of my unknown, but to no avail. What's perplexing all the more is somehow the IR produced peaks, around the mid 2300s, which, according to my text book and the internet so far, doesnt match ANYTHING.
the compound supposedly is made up of only Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Carbon, but if you can figure out something that works with another element, i'd be more than happy to hear it.
here are the data sheets:
IR spectrum: http://www.flickr.com/photos/49092395@N05/45002790...
13C-NMR: http://www.flickr.com/photos/49092395@N05/45009139...
and 1H-NMR: http://www.flickr.com/photos/49092395@N05/45009140...
on the 1H-NMR you will see many failed proposed structures, but maybe you can work from them. I swear, if I could give you 100 points for finding this compound, i would.
5 AnswersChemistry1 decade agoWhat gives this IR value?
Im trying to figure out the identity of an unknown based on a H-NMR, C-NMR, and IR spectrum. For the moment, im tyring to work through the IR...
nothing in my text book or online can explain the peak at 2359 and 2341. We've been told that the compound only contains hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen. If it helps any, we have identified that the compound contains a ketone or ester (H-NMR seems to indicate a ketone).
1 AnswerChemistry1 decade agoWhat chemical gives this NMR sequence?

I'm positive it has an aromatic ring and im MOSTLY sure that it has 12 H and an ether/alcohol group, but i could be wrong on the latter part.
1 AnswerChemistry1 decade agoNeed help configuring a router?
The ultimate goal is to connect my PS3 to the internet, but the school uses a network that runs DHCP, and requires a username/password to access it. the page that contains the login section is only accessible by computer, but i've been told that logging into a computer that is connected through a router will assign the router an IP address that it holds onto, allowing other connections to be made through the various ports without having to repeat the login process...
my problem is that i can't seem to get ANY kind of connection when i try to go through the router, so i can't get to the page where i could log in. i dont have the software disk that came with the router (a linksys BEFSR41 v.2) if one came at all, but i've been to the linksys site and downloaded the latest firmware.
im not a technophile, but i do understand how to enter the address of the router to get to the router settings. i also know that none of the equipment im using (router, powercord, cables) is broken/malfunctioning. im pretty sure the only thing keeping me from making everything work is configuring the router and my computer to work together...could be wrong, but any help would be nice
1 AnswerComputer Networking1 decade agoTrouble setting up a router...?
I've established that the plug to connect to is working, but when i try to hook up my router to it (placing the ethernet cable in one of the router's ports and the cord to connect in the WAN) i get nothin. any ideas?
2 AnswersOther - Computers1 decade agoIs it safe to use a plug from another device to replace one on a different device?
i've got a panasonic TV that got its plug cut off (cant find the original plug) and figured it would be pretty simple to just cut the cord off another device with a similar cord and just wrap up the connection with some electrical tape.
while it is completely within my power to do so, I'm no electrician and have no idea if i'd be creating some death-trap in trying to fix a TV in such a way, so my question is: Is this something dangerous, and if so, are there any ways to properly go about it?
